Sarah McBride: "It is an attempt to distract ... Every single time we hear them say the word 'trans,' look what they're doing with their right hand. Look at what they're doing to pick the pocket of American workers, to fleece seniors by privatizing Social Security and Medicare."

We're getting to the time of year when I start wincing at "Best Of" lists that are entirely big 5 titles. Come on, we don't really believe that, coincidentally, ALL the year's 'best' books were published by the biggest companies and zero small presses, do we?

My new book, Everything Is Tuberculosis, explores the history of our deadliest infectious disease. It's also about our horrifying present: TB still kills kills over a million people per year, even though it's been curable since the 1950s.

You're not "late to the party" when you enjoy an old book for the first time. Books don't have an RSVP deadline. The party started long ago, and guests show up when they're meant to.

I feel mislead by all dystopian literature. It's supposed to be a powerful authoritarian government that lords over a cowering population, and and we just need need a few brave acts of heroism to give the people the courage to rise up.

Instead it's just half the country being dumb and mean.
