I feel like it's because they would rather focus on improving the gameplay and expanding themes over giving fanservice (in terms of merch and collabs for example)? Like, SMT is STILL huge in Japan, and it's not like Atlus isn't aware.

I've worked in quite a few creative industries and I've found that one of the best way to make friends is to be reliable and get things done on time. You don't need to be the best, just someone who can be counted on.

The thing about making friends while trying to network is learning (sometimes finding out the hard way) not everyone wants to be your friend. Some folks are kinder than others, but others are not in the business to make friends.
SO, you want to network but don't know where to begin.
1. DON'T. Make friends instead
2. It's not about what they can do for you
3. Famous people are just people first
4. If you do have to gush, don't just say 'i love your work' , pick one thing and say why. Open ended compliments are awkward

p.s. If you want to make comics, you've got to go and make a comic. Sorry. There's just no shortcut to it. You have to make a comic to show people that you can make comics. Make some friends and make some comics with them. It's fun. Or do it yourself and show it to your friends. That's fun, too!
