In my Bio & Soc class, UGs act as reviewers/editors as a mock peer review. They see
-difficulty finding responsive reviewers (& w/o COI)
-variable quality reviews
-issues matching reviewers to article

Goal is to unveil realities of science evaluation (& hopefully train better reviewers). This helps
kstsosie.bsky.social
Agree to all. Funneling between reviewers accepting papers that cite them often starts with editors’ invite to review. As a guest editor, I also see compounding that, due to time, many reviewers recommend accepting w/o seemingly in-depth review. Many factors contribute to the observed outcome

“The AI in the study probably prompted doctors to become over-reliant on its recommendations, ‘leading to clinicians becoming less motivated, less focused, and less responsible when making cognitive decisions without AI assistance,’ the scientists said in the paper.”
AI Eroded Doctors’ Ability to Spot Cancer Within Months in Study
Artificial intelligence, touted for its potential to transform medicine, led to some doctors losing skills after just a few months in a new study.

This pretty much sums up a lot of my time on too many committees related to policy, ethics, equity, innovation, research, and healthcare in governmental and academic settings: #Indigenous #academia #policy

Faculty want to be helpful to students, but our time is split, and we must prioritize students in which we have a prior (and formalized) commitment.

(And yes, I as an early career researcher am learning new ways to be more protective of my time, too. So this serves as a self-reminder, too.)

#PhD students: pls don't make heavy asks of faculty time/expertise for your dissertation if you cannot include them on your committee. Use your existing committee, drop unhelpful members, or ask someone with service commitment (DGS). Heavy asks can be disproportionate to untenured faculty, esp. WOC.

😆 "Fun" epidemiology and "slightly less fun" epidemiology! Obviously, topics like John Snow would be the former

How does an #Indigenous scientist organize her bookshelf? With these FUN category labels (magnetic)!
- Anthropologists We Actually Like
- Dismantling Power Paradigms (data #feminist, #science communication, #decolonizing works)
- SH*# Non-Natives Say About Native #DNA
- On Race, Racism, and Racists

ASHG is concerned about the research cuts in the proposed U.S. FY26 budget, forecasting substantial reductions to the NIH and other agencies. We urge the U.S. Congress to reject this proposal and maintain support for life-saving biomedical research. Read More: www.ashg.org/publications... #ASHG

As a scientist, I appreciate the effort in signage/marketing. But I also wish the coffee shop was at Gate 27 instead. (Or even 58 for atomic weight, or 2 or 3 for valence…)

At OKC airport.
