5 Things I Learned While Completing the 2nd Draft of My Novel: #1 Abandon your first draft long enough to rediscover it for your second. It was only in forgetting what the novel was about that I was able to rediscover the magic of the story.

It’s Novel November! How are you celebrating? I’m considering using it as an excuse to get back to the novel draft I’m supposed to be taking a break from.

I can’t commit to reading 2 hours a day, but in my dream life I would!
I am trying something in November. National novel-reading month, basically. It is the PERFECT month for reading (at least in the Western hemisphere).

What kind of stories will you cross genres to read? I’m an 80% fantasy reader, but I was browsing the library and picked up this sci fi. Its premise of “one family and how technology divides them” reminded me of the the AI surge we’re seeing now.

I’m in a bit of writing doldrums as I’m in between drafts. Help inspire me by sharing your writing excitement and energy please! What are you working on? What’s going well lately?

Very excited to share that I finished the second draft of my fantasy novel!!! It comes in at about 170K words, so I have some serious editing to do next round. But for now I’m just celebrating 🎉

I’m reading this 1987 fantasy for a book club. The writing style is so different! I don’t read much from this era, but would be interested if others have 80s and 90s favorites?

One of my first stories was written in orange marker when I was 7 or 8. It’s about a young girl (with my same first name) who chases down an intruder and finds a fanged, red eyed rabbit and…she is never seen or heard from again. Apparently I was a dark child.

Been trying to describe how the writing is going lately and the best I can come up with is it’s just…dripping along. Slowly but steadily, not a flood, not a drought.

(Possibly) controversial opinion: if I listen to the first book on audiobook, I have to do audiobooks for the whole series. Murderbot Diaries was like this for me - the narrator was just so good.

Question for the literary agents and published authors on here - how much weight do you give if an author pitching a novel has already published short stories?
How much of a deterrent is it if they haven’t?

This week I wrote 2336 new words, revised 4077 words, wrote 5 days, and only had one big, long, three day headache 🤕 I’ll take it!

My fantasy novel is set in a fictional world in the far north. The summer days are 18+ hours. I’m looking for reading recs that will give me an idea of the ecology, climate, and life of folks living in similar places. I’ll read fiction, nonfiction, folklore, poetry!

Going back through my notes for the novel, and damn I really love making charts, outlines, lists, character sketches, etc that I forget exist the moment I’m done making them. It must be the act that’s valuable, right?
