When the moon meets the sea...

#BlueSkyMonday #MountainMonday #MinimalMonday #minimalism #photography #landscape #scape #nature #thelittlethings #photohour #roadtrip #vanlife #Croatia #EastCoastKin
The picture shows a vast landscape on the island of Pag in Croatia, often described as a 'moon landscape.' In the foreground, barren, rocky hills characteristic of the island are visible. A deep blue sea stretches across the middle of the image, while further bare, light-colored hills are visible in the background. The scene gives an impression of the unique, almost vegetation-free nature of this region, which is shaped by strong winds such as the Bora.

The Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, often called as the southernmost fjord of Europe.

Happy #Scape Friday 🥰

The picture shows a breathtaking view of the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, often referred to as the southernmost fjord of Europe. The bay is surrounded by tall, steeply rising mountains, lushly forested and forming a dramatic backdrop. The deep blue waters of the bay wind through the landscape like a fjord, and several ships, including a cruise ship, can be seen on the water.

Arunachal Pradesh, India - The practice of Apatani women wearing large wooden nose plugs (yaping hurlo) and facial tattoos (tippei) originated as a form of protection but evolved into a powerful marker of their cultural identity. This tradition has largely been abandoned by younger generations.
According to oral tradition, the Apatani women were renowned for their beauty, which unfortunately made them targets for abduction by men from neighboring tribes. To protect themselves, the Apatani elders devised a radical plan. They began tattooing the women's faces and inserting large wooden plugs into their nostrils to make them appear "unattractive" and thus deter potential kidnappers. "I have researched this and can not find the true reason. I find this explanation not credible" Over time, the nose plugs evolved from a protective measure into a profound cultural symbol. The tradition of wearing nose plugs and facial tattoos came to an end in the 1970s. I was fortunate to spend a few hours with this lovely grandmother. She welcomed me into her home to share tea with me. In return, I gave her several tins of tobacco, a prized commodity for the elderly Apatani. Today, only the elderly women of the tribe, many now in their 70s and 80s, carry these distinctive marks. The next generation of Apatani women no longer receives them, and the tradition exists as a cherished but fading aspect of their cultural memory.

The bell tower of Saint Orso seen from the old cemetery

The bell tower of a Romanesque church in Aosta, framed from within the nearby cemetery. Two autumn-colored trees frame the shot and, in the center, crosses and graves. In the background are mountains and a cloudy sky.

Very timely and interesting statement from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Particularly interesting re my own work, but also to those who want to know just what the hell is going on.

Beyond the flags: grief, polarisation and the work of repair
Amid grief, rage and division, there are seeds of hope and repair to be found in the North East. But they will not flourish if we stay silent.

Hulhumalé, Maldives. Sunrise Golden Hour at Phase 1 beach. The sand in the foreground is shaded by the reflection from the rising sun. Then is a coconut thatched roof supported by two coconut wood poles and a tree shading it, visible to the top right of the frame. Under the roof is a wooden bench for two people facing the lagoon and the sunrise. The lagoon is calm and colored by a mix of gold and purple. The sky just above the horizon is golden and transitions into a purple higher up.

Some of the smallest joys in life are being stolen daily by the genocidal Israeli regime. Since Oct 7, they’ve murdered, on average, one child per hour (source: Save the Children UK). A dark, lasting stain on humanity.

At dawn in Bukhara, a small child with a balloon lingers beneath ancient arches, fragile joy suspended in shadow and light, where silence, history, and innocence softly converge.
