I'm taking up portraiture.
A smiley face with hair a little bit like George Washington's, labeled "George Washington."

Don’t toss Lithium-Ion batteries or devices in the trash or regular recycling bins—they can spark a fire. 🚫

Drop them off at an approved battery recycling spot. Find one near you: call2recycle.org

O’NEILL: “.. Given the unprecedented market valuations .., I must ask: What, exactly, is the purpose? If AI, with all its obvious power, cannot be marshaled in ways that materially solve our biggest problems, what will all this have been for?”

Because I like a challenge with my coffee, I found this on Instagram. Not the whole program but I think they're what you want. Wish I could be there!

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Bray is a historian at Rutgers who received death threats after landing on Turning Points USA's Professor Watchlist. As a result, he announced he was moving to Europe. And then this happened.

This kind of harassment and abuse of scholars is Charlie Kirk's legacy and it's only getting worse.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

Yale researchers didn't stop there. They also identified what people most need to know to catalyze action and support climate policy; and it's not about global temps, ice sheets, or ocean currents.

What people most need to know about climate change is that (1) others care, and (2) there is hope.
Understanding six “key truths” about climate change predicts policy support, discussion, and political advocacy
Social norms and collective efficacy are strong predictors

Thank you, Tara. I'm sorry you're dealing with it, too. It sucks.

Had to see The Lion King when we were in New York because the costumes were designed and made about an hour drive from our house here in Oregon.

the mayor just repeated his constant refrain that ICE agents in portland need to abide by PPB standards, such as wearing body cameras, limits on munitions, etc. could "using a dog as a threat" be a violation of PPB standards?

It worked out ok, largely because I didn't fight it. Sometimes you have to swim parallel.

I used to think that was where I'd be next. Like 15 years ago. It still may happen!

I want to start traveling with looking for my next hometown in mind. I need to get my body to be a bit more reliable, though.

Any favorite places you'd recommend? I liked Boston when I visited a few years ago.

Amazon got their first warehouse here in Fort Wayne in 2020 approved with a code name and city council NDAs and apparently this process is so completely normal in tech now that they're doing the SAME THING EVERYWHERE

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that all these data centers are going into communities that have been historically targeted for exploitation and have the least amount of civic power wielded by the people living there.

Why Are Plans for This Alabama Data Center So Hush-Hush?
Officials in Bessemer, Alabama, are mum on Project Marvel, a proposed data center the size of 18 Walmart Supercenters.

There is one central, core truth to hold on to:

Most Americans don't actually know most of what's happening. But they still don't approve of the slice they do know about.

It's context-dependent, for sure. Maybe I really need to be heard and the other person starts talking about something else, or themself. Not pleasurable. Otoh if I'm talking about something I want to understand better and the other person is riffing in a way that feels like exploration, great!
