"KWMR is important. Not in the abstract, but in the sense that it holds the shape of our days." Cameo Wood published a terrific letter to this week's Point Reyes Light about the role our station plays in the West Marin Community. Thank you, Cameo! www.ptreyeslight.com
An easy plan for KWMR
In West Marin, mornings begin with fog and a voice on the radio. The fog lifts, the voice remains. This is how we keep the day from slipping.
KWMR just lost more than a quarter of its budget—25 percent gone to a federal clawback that arrived like all bureaucratic weather: sudden, impersonal, real. Budgets are arithmetic until they aren't. Then they're people, time, programs. What vanishes is not a number but a station's margin of breath.
Consider the inventory. Music shows that know our roads by feel. Public affairs that speak plainly. Spanish-language programming that tells our neighbors they are heard in the language they dream in.
Updates when the creeks rise and floods turn our routes into guesswork. A local ar-chive-yes, check the archives-where our weeks are stored, imperfectly and com-pletely, so that memory can be replayed at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday. There are many ways to listen— on the dial, online, from a phone in the market parking lot while the signal skips across the bay.
Ask, just for a moment: What would it be like if we didn't have it? The ordinary answer is "we'd manage." The truer answer is that we would not be the same place. The station is unique to our area:
POINT REYES LIGHT

not a franchise, not a template, not interchangeable with something from over the hill. It sounds like here.
A listener, Lee Giammona, offered a plain solution with a name that sticks: "25 to Stay Alive." Add 25 percent to whatever you already give. Small or large. Monthly or once. It is not heroic. It is neighborly.
It closes distance. It keeps the voice where we expect to find it when the power blinks and the sky goes the wrong color.
We can argue policy later. Today we keep the transmitter warm. We tune in, we share the archives, we tell a friend how to stream, we bring in the next donor the way we used to bring in the next pie for the fundraiser-without ceremony, because the point is obvious.
KWMR is important. Not in the ab-stract, …
