I finished Sheltering Sky. It thought was _ok_ (don't trust me in these matters though). But, what has stuck with me was this introduction by Tobias Wolff.
The power of this novel (the sheltering sky) lies precisely in the reality of what it makes us fear—the sweetness of that voice in each of us that sings the delight of not being responsible, of refusing the labor of choice by which we create ourselves. This appetite for the “mindless contentment” of self-surrender is nothing new in our makeup, but we modern folk have devised for ourselves a singularly rich offering of oppressions to satisfy it. We all know the menu: totalitarian ideologies, totalitarian theologies, drugs, guru worship, mass-market advertising, television addiction, pornography, and, just so we won’t feel too bad about any of this, determinist psychologies and sociologies that speak of us as products with only a culturally induced illusion of free will. Our failing resistance to these attacks on our sense of worth as individuals is the central drama of our time.

Welcome to Meditations in an Emergency Rebecca Solnit 02 Feb 2025 — 6 min read We are very clearly in a lot of emergencies right now. They demand action. But action demands thought and thoughtfulness: who are we, what are our values, our goals, our allies, our possibilities, and our powers? What can we learn from those who've faced similar crises, what's distinct about this one, and what equipment is at hand? The title of this newsletter I'm launching today, the lovely oxymoron of "Meditations in an Emergency," I borrowed from a poem by the great gay poet Frank O'Hara. It felt like exactly the description for what I hope to do here: think for and with you about the emergencies we're in and what to do about them, to meditate on causes, meanings, openings. Sometimes even in an emergency, or rather especially in an emergency, meditation as gathering ourselves and deepening our understanding is exactly what we need to do. It's worth noting that the word emergency is built out of emerge, as in to exit or rise out of something, the opposite of merge, when things come together. An emergency is when things come apart--it can be breakage but also opening. and it's related to the words emergence and emergent. "Emergence is the way complex systems and patterns arise out of multiplicity of simple interactions," writes Adrienne Maree Brown in her book Emergent Strategy.

So many great takes. Here's one:
At the top, there was more abstraction than anything else. Big corporations necessarily deal in more abstruse problems and more elaborate solutions, and tell different stories. The challenge for them is that there are only so many plausible or even passably appealing Whole New Ways To Watch Television, regardless of how much better the screens get. That those screens really are getting a lot better only means so much; at this level, the work is not solving any particular problem but consolidating a suite of overarching semi-solutions around all of them. This gambit inevitably bumps up against the outer boundaries of the possible in terms of individual solutions to structural problems: Even a notional future AI assistant—one that can do the things contemporary ones can't, one that Truly Gets You—can only do so much about poorly designed or badly maintained public spaces. The worldview that gave us the Hyperloop does not have solutions to any of that; ideologically, and just at a more elemental level, it doesn't believe in them.
