Grew up in a UFW/IWW household. Now I’m a librarian (public to academic), union thug, and general roustabout. Anonymous because I’m not tenured yet. Pro-Palestinian, pro-trans, anti-racist, and not fit for human consumption.

It’s Labor Day weekend and that means it’s a great time to teach kids about the context of the holiday. I’ve compiled a list of books for a variety of age ranges that talk about labor and unions. Feel free to add more!

This is only semi-related but I was just thinking about how often I ask my students questions about online etiquette and how non-judgmental they are when they answer. Gen Z is great

So if you’ve ever wondered why I posted something in particular or why I broke a cultural norm on this page, it’s likely because I had no idea what I was doing.

Anyway, social media is weird and I guess my choices are to quit social media, or keep fumbling around Bluesky until I learn the cultural norms.

Anyway I was agreeing with them but I think I didn’t communicate that properly, which is a challenge with character limitations. That person is of course free to block anyone for any reason, but I’ve learned a lot from their posts and I’m going to miss seeing them.

I wish there was some kind of book on social and cultural expectations for short-form social media. I was never on Twitter and because of that I feel like I sometimes don’t understand expectations on Bluesky. I got blocked by someone I respect today and I think it’s a faux pas to talk about that?

Don’t worry, I know that you’re on the side of the worker. And there are plenty of professors who HAVE earned some blame. But for those of us trying to be thoughtful about it, it quickly becomes a workload conversation. We’re just not given the time to understand any new “advances” in higher ed

Not to mention that admin is cramming it down our throats. So we as a group also don’t have the knowledge to be able to fight against it.

One of my students was told as much by their professor. They asked the prof to explain something they didn’t understand and the prof said “just ChatGPT it.”🫠🫠

Not saying any of this to try and diffuse blame. But so many faculty are drowning in work, and we’re not given the time and tools we need to educate ourselves on the dangers of AI, let alone our students. Luckily for my campus, the librarians are teaching faculty and have the ability to help

The only reason I’ve been able to do that research is because I’m asked by those overworked professors to lead those discussions during library instruction sessions. So I’ve had to cram that research onto my over-crowded plate

So many faculty (myself included) have gradually been asked to take on such intensely heavy workloads that they simply don’t have enough hours in the day to become knowledgeable enough in critical AI literacy that they can discuss it in the classroom. I know folks who are doing 2-3 people’s jobs

There are plenty of professors who are embracing AI for all sorts of (bad) reasons. But there are lots more professors who hate AI but are so overloaded with work that they don’t have the bandwidth to guide responsible critical conversations about AI. I know because plenty of them have contacted me

So far there have been zero trans women reported as having visited epsteins pedo island. But lots of people who want you to think trans women are threats to children seemed to have gone there at some point.

Curious...

It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.

The US put Assata Shakur at the top of their terrorism list as recently as 2013, which really should have told everyone how much people who fight for the US’s founding documents promising equality and justice to be upheld for Black and brown people are considered Enemies of America.
A photo of Assata Shakur, a Black woman with her hair in box braids, wearing a black shirt with a white crocheted vest over it. Her face is tipped up towards the sun, smiling, and her hands are on her hips. A blue sky and a waving Cuban flag are behind her.

I put a cup of peanuts out thinking it would take 24 hours for them to find it and it was gone in less than 20 minutes 😂

Cinnamon should have felt comfortable addressing issues to its boss directly. Doesn’t it know that a union only hurts its relationship with management? /s 🙃

I’m on the ground near Broadview. Because of illegal fence, we are at a nearby intersection.
