Not really. I try to keep everyone and everything as canon as possible. Of course they get put into things that aren't in canon, but I try to keep their personalities as close to who they are/how they'd react etc.

This. I try to keep my NPCs as canon as possible but like... I'm putting them in situations that aren't canon so obviously there's lots of room to be creative and they've become my personal NPC-OC.
I dunno, I feel like anyone who does any kind of creative work with an established NPC will inevitably do at least a little OC-ification of them in the process. And that’s a good thing, as far as I’m concerned! That’s what the “transformative” in “transformative work” means!
