#OTD in 1815, Napoléon is acclaimed back in Paris. He enters the city unopposed and goes to the Tuileries palace to establish his new government. Louis XVIII had fled during the night. The “vol de l’aigle” was over. War would soon ensue though… #history #Napoleon

#OTD in 1796, Republican marriage between Napoléon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais at the Hôtel de Mondragon. Napoléon, who arrived late, yelled "marry us quickly!" Fun fact, they both lied on their age to reduce their 6 year age difference to a mere 18 months.

#OTD in 1815, Napoléon escapes Elba on board of the Inconstant. He’ll land at Golfe-Juan on March 1st, eventually triggering the period known as the Hundred Days. It will lead to the Seventh Coalition, Waterloo and ultimately the exile on St-Helena.

#OTD in 1916, beginning of the battle of Verdun. This horrific clash symbolizes the human catastrophe that was WWI. The French will eventually prevail, after both sides suffered over 700,000 casualties.

#OTD in 1814, Napoléon defeats the Prussian army under Blücher at Brienne, where he had been a military student in 1779-84.

It’s one of Napoléon’s last victories in what will eventually be a losing war. The Campaign of France is recognized as one of his greatest, despite his ultimate defeat.
