That doesn’t mean I should silence him.
That doesn’t mean his research on Napoléon is invalid.
That doesn’t mean we can’t talk about French history together.

I believe a lot of the current political tension in France, like in other places, comes from something simple and painful.
We no longer know how to talk to each other.
We’ve forgotten how to disagree without turning each other into enemies.

Political bigotry is the enemy here.
I didn’t create this podcast to help it grow stronger.
I created it to encourage dialogue.
To share culture.
To promote understanding.

And it will not convince me to take the episode down.

Mr. Sarkozy has the right to be a right-wing conservative.
He has the right to support his father.
And I have the right to disagree with both of those things.
That disagreement didn’t stop him from joining my podcast.

But that doesn’t mean I get to silence someone just because I disagree.

Second, I do not share Mr. Sarkozy’s political views.
I’m a progressive. I support Mediapart.
I’m probably what many on the right would call "woke."
I believe in equality. I believe in ecology.
I believe people should be allowed to be who they are or who they need to be.

My podcast isn’t about the present moment.
It’s about French history.

The criticism came because of what's happening in France right now.
Mr. Sarkozy's father, the former French president, has been tried for corruption and found guilty.
And because of that, I was called a "collaborator."
A "right-wing nut."
There were more expletives.
