We know invasive species cause several ecological impacts—but what kinds, exactly? 🌿⚠️🧪
Our latest paper breaks down the different types of impacts, from individuals to entire ecosystems. #Ecology #InvasionBiology

authors.elsevier.com/a/1k%7EhNcZ3...
Figure illustrating 19 types of ecological impacts caused by invasive species, categorized across six levels of ecological organization: individual, population, species, assemblage, ecosystem function/service, and abiotic environment. The levels are shown as a series of six downward arrows, each representing a broader ecological scale. Each impact type is numbered, labeled, and illustrated with an icon, positioned according to the level it primarily affects. Arrows indicate how impacts can accumulate and cascade from one level to another, showing the interconnected and multi-scalar nature of biological invasion impacts.

How do your #linguistic, #economic & #gender backgrounds impact your #scientific productivity? @tatsuya-amano.bsky.social & co reveal that being a woman, a non-native English speaker, and from a low-income country is associated with a 70% reduction in productivity @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4n3RLRQ
Scientific productivity gap based on English-language peer-reviewed papers. Shown are the maximum % differences in the number of peer-reviewed papers published by female native English speakers from a high-income country (-45%), female non-native English speakers from a high-income country (-60%), and female non-native English speakers from a lower-middle income country (-70%), compared to male native English speakers from a high-income country (red flag). Darwin's naturalisation conundrum poses two conflicting hypotheses around invasion processes

Using ~3000 North American fish communities, we show that native relatatedness promotes non-native establishment, but invasion richness links more strongly to human drivers

www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Ecological similarity governs non-native fish establishment while human pressure and native diversity shape invasion richness
Closely related fish species are more likely to invade, while human activity drives the number of invaders in a community.

Our new paper is out in @science.org! By exploring the rich genetic diversity of Brazil, we show how fine-scale genomic analyses reveal that this diversity, rooted in Indigenous ancestry and centuries of complex demographic history, plays a key role in population health.

You don't need to finish and submit your paper before the end of the year. You won't gain time if you do as nobody is going to review it over the holidays. And you know what, your paper is going to be so much better when you read through it with a well-rested brain in the new year.
