Dunkelman: “The problem stems from today’s progressives lacking a clear theory of how public authority is supposed to work.”
"Unitary executive theory - but for good” is a theory of power, but one contrary to accountability.
Progressives who care about democracy also need a theory of accountability.

Once you take away the false claim that authoritarians offer “brutal efficiency” you are just left with the brutal part. Authoritarianism might seem like a hack to get things done, but is a system of govt that ultimately fails for the reason Trump is failing.

Dunkelman says that progressives can take advantage of new SCOTUS doctrine.
Reality: The Supreme Court is a political body that doesn’t treat Dem and GOP Presidents the same way.
Their vision is an empowered President, not a a more capable executive branch: strongman, weak state.

Lesson 1: Breaking the law and building things are different skills
Look at Dunkelman’s strongest examples, the top of the batting order for how Trump is "freeing the stuck wheels of bureaucracy."
They are, without exception, evidence of an incompetent and corrupt govt doing unpopular things.

Like they can make it say certain things (“there are only two genders,” “migration bad”) but there isn’t enough text out there in the world describing a conservative consensus reality because it’s just not a coherent thing. They can’t make a conservative Wikipedia, even synthetically
