This man is lean, long necked, his fingers slender. Thick dark hair sprinkled with silver, silvery-gray eyes, narrow jaw, high cheekbones. His teeth gleam white, feral. He is Amanda’s ideal—a mix of fairy-tale villain and sharp-edged professional, although what he does is a mystery #WipSnips.

Numi had sailed by night in the Solan Goose, and enjoyed almost everything about it. She hadn’t anticipated that floating down the river in darkness would be any different. Spose I should’ve known better… It had to be the sound, she thought. Not the sound of water rippling past the bows; that seemed much the same. It was the sound of the river itself; a heavy sound, as if the water were thicker, like syrup; the sound, and the lack of light, nothing to be seen but a furtive glimmer of moons’-light on black water. It repelled her and it drew her, as if… but she hadn’t cast herself into the river. The bank had collapsed. She was clinging to the main-mast. She hardly knew how she had got there from the the rail, but she clearly had.
