BREAKING: At Pope Leo XIV’s urging, U.S. Catholic bishops just delivered the strongest rebuke of a sitting president in Church history — condemning Trump-Vance raids as “inhumane” and “dehumanizing” in a 216–5 vote.
NEW: At Pope Leo’s Urging, Bishops Issue Historic Rebuke of Trump’s Raids
Nearly all U.S. Catholic bishops united in Baltimore to denounce the Trump administration’s “inhumane” deportation campaign — a near-unanimous, unprecedented moral stand against a sitting president.

Just got word from my college roommate - who is the state archivist for the state of South Dakota - that due to the DOGE shutdowns of IMLS, they can no longer fund InterLibrary Loan in SD.

This means exchange between libraries, ability to get books delivered across the system, is gone as of 4/30.

So a 1.3% chance it *doesn’t* safely pass earth? Sounds kinda high.
We're aware of near-Earth asteroid 2024 YR4, estimated at 40-90m in diameter, with current data suggesting a 98.7% chance of safely passing Earth in 2032.

The UK is not expected to be at risk, but the National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC) will continue to monitor the event.

Sometimes it's hard to grasp the concentration of wealth in the US so I ran some numbers using data from the Federal Reserve (fred.stlouisfed.org). There are 134,000 households that comprise the top 0.1% of wealth in the US and together they are worth over $22 trillion. 1/3

Deleting Xitter was cathartic. I first joined in 2009 and enjoyed following so many excellent people who greatly expanded my perspective on numerous topics in science, politics culture and life. Its decline feels like such a loss and the joy I used to feel was all gone.
