Outside of Osburn, Idaho, a defunct bridge has become a new wildlife crossing. Fencing was installed to funnel wildlife to the overpass, costing $645,000. The bridge will be removed in the next 10 years but residents hope a new crossing will replace it.

A recent study monitored a single road running through the Western Ghats in India for a year to assess roadkill and the environmental parameters affecting it. Understanding animal behavior is important when identifying where to build crossing structures.

Roadkill study demonstrates urgent necessity for safeguards
A survey of roadkill in the Nelliyampathy Hills in Kerala recorded 330 individual dead animals from at least 72 species.

Across the U.S., species like bobcats and red wolves face challenges presented by roadways that fragment habitat and threaten their recovery. Now, states are building wildlife crossings to reconnect habitat and provide safe passage to wildlife.
