Yes he does. Having first seen him as Frank'n'Furter, I am in awe at his range.

Ever read the GK Chesterton Father Brown story The Hammer of God? Brown talks about how looking at people from a height (he's talking about more than just physical height here) leads to dehumanization and worse.

"One sees great things from the valley, only small things from the peak."
"I think there is something rather dangerous about standing on these high places even to pray," said Father Brown. "Heights were made to be looked at, not to be looked from."

"Do you mean that one may fall over," asked Wilfred.

"I mean that one's soul may fall if one's body doesn't," said the other priest.

"I scarcely understand you," remarked Bohun indistinctly.

"Look at that blacksmith, for instance," went on Father Brown calmly; "a good man, but not a Christian--hard, imperious, unforgiving. Well, his Scotch religion was made up by men who prayed on hills and high crags, and learnt to look down on the world more than to look up at heaven. Humility is the mother of giants. One sees great things from the valley; only small things from the peak."

If memory serves (and it don't), my country's national team often vied for the Gold with the US in this ancient and honorable discipline, which can trace its origins all the way back to Mt. Olympus (where it parked its car); eventually and with some help.

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

It's all variations on the theme of dismissing fascism as the work of evil/stupid people, rather than understanding and fighting it as a system of ideas that springs from specific social conditions (capitalism).

It's a pretty big deal that the NYC Bar Association--one of the most prominent and respected bar associations in the country--is accusing the President of ordering the "unlawful summary execution," i.e. murder--of civilians in violation of US and international law. www.nycbar.org/press-releas...

"The government is selecting targets—cities, communities, people it doesn’t like—and then deploying federal agents to find crimes. Not investigating crimes and following evidence to perpetrators. Choosing perpetrators and then searching for crimes to justify their detention."

"Let me say this clearly: nobody in this country is safe."

"Federal agents detained American citizens without individualized probable cause this week. They handcuffed children. They sorted people by race. They treated an American city like occupied territory."

some type of burrowing creature/s seems to be establishing it/themselves in the sloping grassy bank of the large depression outside my front door (more details in alt txt)
here we have a small hole with dirt strewn around the entrance (oh jeez that sounds more than vaguely sexual, i know... bear with me please) and a leaf which seems to have been deliberately arranged to appear like accidental flotsam, camouflaging the uh entrance. this hole appears to have been dug with a devil-may-care disregard for camouflage, as if whoever dug it has been in the neighborhood for long enough that it feels safe enough to gradually give less of a shit about hole/entrance security. Merely living underground, i mean considered by itself as a way of life, is probably extremely conducive to the self-preservation of the hole-digging organism anyway, so i can't really fault this creature for lax security. Spongy, soft ground, with areas of brown grasses on the surface, appears suggestive of tunneling activity beneath. I wonder to what extent, and with what methodologies, this burrow system can be mapped... okay, here is a hole with frest dirt cast outside the entrance (or exit?) which, to my mind, is evident of a surprising degree of nonchalance in the mind of the creature(s) in question. This organism clearly has other stuff on its mind besides hole concealment. Hiding this hole from aboveground predators has become something of an afterthought. In the modern parlance of managerialism, which seeks to use the prevarication of human artifice to abstractify myriad emergent interdependent ramifying systems of the natural world, one might say that this burrowing creature has elected to circle back after the action items in the current sprint have been iterated upon. In the meantime, anyone being ext... uh, externa..., externalitally(??) eaten by a predatory b2b stakeholder is strongly encouraged to fill out a support ticket, secure in the knowledge that its cries of distress and physical pain are very important to the organization. At The Burrow, the individual feels empowered to function independently within a relatively flat organizational hierarchy, yet the entire org synergistically leverages everyone's contribution. Traditionally, a high rate of turnover has been the most useful adaptation to mitigate attrition in the face of predatory acquisitions undertaken by aggressive third-party private equity firms. But the key innovation—one with which we can credit the conspicuous success of this particular burrow network—is to establish The Burrow in a small-creature-friendly jurisdiction. Indeed, Q3 2025 KPIs (including burrow volume, number of holes, projected seasonal leaf cover, diversity of available food, etc etc) are all trending positively. Here is included part of a wooden upright post in the shot, in an attempt to establish scale. Not much underground activity in evidence here. I think this hole has been around for a while. One night last year, i was out here, having a smoke, when movement on the ground caught my eye. Though it was difficult to see, and the hole was partially obscured by a leaf, i was able to discern a tiny snout poking up out of the ground(!). The creature was very carefully looking around, sniffing the air, making gradual movements toward exiting the burrow. But, it soon sensed me, and froze, stayed like that for a while, and then, when my attention was diverted for a second, suddenly vanished back down the hole.

Based on what i saw, including the shape of its head, i think this creature was a vole, or "meadow mouse". I could think of worse neighbors. Thankfully, the burrows are too small to accommodate The Rat, who is a big mean bastard, judging by the size of his shit. He shows up regularly around this time of year, so he can break into the building and luxuriate in our nice warm basement.

I also entertain the possibility that the burrow system is extensive enough to accommodate other species. We have toads who roam abroad at night, so they must hole up someplace during the day. I've noticed that the habitats of voles and misc herps overlap, and i wonder about the state of interspecies diplomacy.

It's fascism time. Here is Miller, channeling Goebbels, and encouraging Trump's thug posse to go to town on the domestic enemy:
[On] 1 October, in Memphis, ... Stephen Miller [spoke] before a rally of Ice agents and federal marshals in anticipation of the arrival of a contingent of national guard troops. Miller delivered his imitation of Patton. “The gangbangers that you deal with – they think they’re ruthless? They have no idea how ruthless we are. They think they’re tough? They have no idea how tough we are. They think they’re hardcore? We are so much more hardcore than they are.” Miller, not any mere general, gave the order. “You are unleashed.”

Lord, grant them the knowledge that science-fiction is just as often about what you're not supposed to do as much as it's a roadmap to what should be done, and then give them a double-helping of the wisdom to tell the difference. Amen.
