He/Him. A programmer with thespian leanings. I have a love of laserdiscs and physical media in general. Expect lots of rabbits, nerdiness, video editing, and unhealthy levels of Highlander 2.

LGBTQ+ welcome. Fascists not.

And since I've lost a lot this year between moving here and AI attracting more and more customers away from my other freelance businesses, don't forget that you can support this account on Patreon. 🙏
By promoting all the great projects, big and small, on a daily basis, I almost forget to promote my own. 😁

Over the past three years, between too many posts and social media relocations, I have gradually assembled a rather nice resource on sci-fi creation.

It's starting to look like something. ☝️

I've never heard the Dark Side of the Moon quad mix...wasn't it done by Alan Parsons? Or did they reject his mix and do their own? I remember there being some sort of drama with the mix.

On a related note I'm expecting my Blu Ray Audio copy of The Alan Parsons Project "I Robot" to turn up today!

While most surround sound music enthusiasts are probably spending their weekend with the brand new 50th anniversary Blu Ray edition of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" I'm just sitting back with my morning coffee and enjoying my 2011 5.1 SACD.

Pink Floyd are masters at mixing music for surround.

I know...you can't improve perfection.

I always see surround mixes as being an alternative rather than a replacement for the original. Most times the original is the best...but sometimes it's nice to experience something in a different way. Pet Sounds would be tricky to remaster for any number of speakers. I think I've only heard mono.

I've not heard Purple Rain or the Black Album (I'll have to look out for them), but my DVD-A of Rumours will be getting played soon. I haven't heard it for a while but I remember it being a solid 5.1 mix.

I'm glad that Queen are finally embracing surround mixes again after being brief early adopters...but with how revisionist this is it's only ever going to be a curiosity. I like listening to it every now and then when I'm in the mood for something different, but it's far from definitive.

I was having such a good time that I put on the next surround album in my collection; Queen's debut album in Dolby Atmos on Blu Ray Audio.

This controversial mix is highly revisionist, with Roger Taylor redoing most of the drums and some inexcusable auto tuning on Freddie Mercury's vocals!

It's still a lovely surround mix of a great album, a fun occasional listen, but it certainly doesn't replace the original mix for me.

Again I only have a 5.1 setup but the Atmos folds down nicely.

Found it for a great price second hand. It even came with the previous owner's collection of Moody Blues magazine cutouts!

Now if only I could find an affordable 5.1 DVD of "In Search Of The Lost Chord"

I'm breaking my chronological album order of the listen through of my surround sound album collection, but you know how the other day I said I'd love to get hold of a copy of The Moody Blues "On the Threshold of a Dream" on SACD someday...

...well look what turned up in the mail this morning!

At least they haven't destroyed Blake's 7 yet. The first two series are down and safe...let's just hope the last two don't get hit with the AI stick.

Bizarrely the bells are somehow lost in the 2009 mix, and I like that this SACD uses the original intended ending with Mike and Vivian Stanshall stamping around the recording studio, Vivian talking nonsense, Mike playing the sailors hornpipe as he follows him. Bizarre!

Today's lunchtime surround sound listening session is Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" in 4.0 on SACD.

I actually own the 2009 5.1 mix of this on DVD but I prefer this SACD quadrophonic mix.

My copy also includes an SACD booklet.
