I have another video today! It's about old-school video projectors and how amazing they were.

Seriously, not only is it almost unbelievable that this even works, but it's doing full HD video with incredibly good image quality. It's also a royal PITA.

Video projectors used to be ridiculously cool

I'm certainly tempted to make some (official) enquiries 🤣
laserdiscturtle.bsky.social
I'm not sure. I watched the first two episodes and noticed what looked to be slight film damage here and there, then I spotted credits for "Film Editor", so it migth have been shot and edited on film...which would make it a rather easy HD transfer. The only problem being that it's a niche show.

Yeah, an overall improvement. Would love a Blu Ray upgrade someday, even if it's "just" an upscale.

Oh yeah, the 2013 Collector's Edition DVD of "Ultraviolet" is a huge improvement over the original 2001 set.

It's still letterboxed, a bit desaturated, and maybe a hint of DNR, but the fact that this transfer avoids the near constant rainbow artefacts of the old DVDs makes it a worthwhile upgrade.
A screenshot from the 2001 DVD. A close-up of a blonde, white woman sitting in front of some office blinds. There are numerous odd rainbow colour artefacts showing in the details of her hair. A screenshot from the 2013 DVD, showing the same shot. The colours are bit duller but the rainbow artefacts are nowhere to be seen, giving a much cleaner looking picture. A screenshot from the 2001 DVD. It shows two people sitting on a bench in a garden. The colours are very vivid, but there are a lot of rainbow artefacts on the wooden slats of the bench as well as in the details of the garden foliage. A screenshot from the 2013 DVD, showing the same shot. Again the colours are more muted, but the details are much clearer with no rainbow artefacts.

Relieved to hear that the new #4K #BluRay of #RockyHorrorPictureShow is the full length UK cut of the film which includes the song "Superheroes."

I half expected it to be the shortened US cut as that was all that was on Disney+ when I last looked.

Trying not to get too excited about recent rumours of #DoctorWho missing episode returns, but I can't help but dream.

The character limit is too small here so here is my full post from Mastodon: mas.to/@LaserdiscTu...
A post from me over and Mastodon. It reads:

"Trying not to get too excited about recent rumours of #DoctorWho missing episode returns, but I can't help but dream.

I'd love to see at least part of "Power of the Daleks" come back, with Episode 1 being my most wanted recovery.

A regenerated Doctor uncertain of who he is and companions unsure they can trust him. Meanwhile colonists discover a buried spaceship, resurrect the inhabitants. The Doctor insists they are a threat, but the Daleks chant "I am your servant!"

A chilling slow burn"

there's an episode of The Simpsons where Marge tries to get a violent cartoon pulled from the airwaves, only to discover that the people backing her aren't going to stop at just the art that *she* doesn't like, and that supporting artistic freedom means accepting discomfort.

It aired in 1990.

Midway through doomscrolling on my phone last month, I thought: ‘Why don’t I just read a book instead of getting depressed doing this?’ So, with zero alteration to my working hours, I now devote the time I used to spend doomscrolling to reading instead. I’ve read 6 books in the last 2 weeks. Happy!

Who could ever have imagined when I played a fictional rebel who joined the Resistance to oppose a criminal Authoritarian & wannabe King, it would be happening in real-life?

I see that my largely ignored skeet on Tuesday has had the desired effect. Well done to everyone involved. Carry on.
A screen of a post re: missing episodes of Doctor Who I posted on Tuesday.

I see that once again the PM has failed to mention the most pressing issue in the UK in his speech to conference

The silence from this government regarding the 97 missing episodes of Doctor Who is deafening.

From the Film Is Fabulous Facebook page:
Facebook comment from Film is Fabulous to Justyn Adderley: "Thanks. As mentioned by Sue Malden at our RECOVERED event in May, we are aware of several missing episodes of Doctor Who (Sue stated one of two, but there are more than this) in private film collections in the U.K. We are liaising with the individuals about cataloguing and preserving their entire collection, including the missing Doctor Who episodes, and ensuring that copies are returned to the BBC. We expect to make a detailed announcement shortly."

Reminds me of back when Moku found that he could worry the pellet bag.

I still miss this little bundle of mischief.
A picture of a brown and grey lion head rabbit sitting on top of an open plan pen made of square panels that slot together. Through the bars of one of the squares he's found that he can pull on a piece of the plastic pellet bag. He can't actually get at the pellets, so he's just sitting there, pulling with his mouth on the torn top of the bag through the bars. You can see he's pulling back with all his little might. A similar picture to the previous one but taken a few moments later. Moku has lost his grip on the top of the plastic bag. He'd been using all his weight to pull back on the bag, so now that he's lost his grip his body is jerking backwards. The picture captures him just as he's lost the grip, so he's a bit of blur as he jerks backwards.

For a while we kept Florence's bag of pellets on top of her cat tree and of course she worked out where they were.

Even after moving them to a more secure location she'd still jump up there and look, so now we leave a portion controlled bowl of pellets there so she can still enjoy a "sneaky" treat.
A picture of a fluffy, sandy coloured rabbit sitting on top of a grey and white two tiered cat tree, essentially two boxes stacked on top of each other with a platform, plenty of places for her to hide, nap and climb. There is a green bag of pellets next to the rabbit, she has obviously been snacking from it. A picture of the same rabbit sitting on top of the same cat tree but from a closer angle. The bag of pellets is now gone and has been replaced by a bowl with a small handful of pellets in it. The rabbit is now looking towards the camera, her ears up, she looks very, very fluffy. A picture of Florence sitting on top of the cat tree, taken from behind as she snacks at the bowl. From this angle she's just a big ball of ginger fur with a huge big fluffy white tale.

Starting spooky season by watching an absolute underrated gem of a series; Ultraviolet.

First time I've watched it in years and I'm delighted that it stands up incredibly well considering it's 27 years old!

The DVD is certainly showing its age though, needs a modern transfer! Blu Ray maybe?
The front cover of Ultraviolet on DVD. The artwork is very dark, with four purple tinted faces in each colour. The title is shown in the middle of the artwork in purple and white. The cover is embossed and when the light catches it a repeating patter of words can be seen, they read "they look like us, they act like us." A picture of the inner case showing a picture of the main cast as well as production credits. The main cast are Jack Davenport, Susannah Harker, Idris Elba, and Philip Quast.

John Logie Baird demonstrates the world's first television receiver in London, using greyscale technology.

First, a ventriloquist dummy head, Stooky Bill, then a human being, William Edward Taynton, the first person to be televised in a full tonal range.

Yeah, I remember hunting for it a few times and never being able to find it. Always meant to import it at some point but never got around to it.
