Radical comic strips about antiquity. Pro the now illegal gender marker X. Against the toxicity of X (Twitter). Pro the X of kisses. Antifascist.

How we look at the ancient Jewish and other pasts tells us much about how we MAKE our PRESENT. Ancient demons and monsters aren't just fun and cool (they're also that)! How they land in the present day and who they resonate for is very revealing.

Because YES the racist visual regime that praises the convention called "realism" is the same forensic gaze that presumes to judge bodies and assign their gender in binary ways. Racism and cisnormative ways of looking & classifying "non-normative" bodies.

The "crude" vs "realist" false binary still prevails in contemporary art historical scholarship on antiquity albeit sometimes couched in other language. See my book on how it's used to devalue / misgender images of Lilith and other demons in Babylonian incantation bowls.

Of COURSE the evolutionary view that pits "realism" over other representational schemes is racist / false. Note also the WHITEning in the images on LHS is BLEACHED. Ancient art was in glorious COLOR and not YT! Paging @sarahbond.bsky.social
I keep seeing the left image (BCE/CE! ahem) on my socials & this idea that premodern people "evolved" to realism/more figurative (--> "more evolved"), that it was the goal, that more complex interests or forces weren't part of all that -->

Is part of white supremacy.

Just here to name that today.

Transing is for everyone!
Transing for everyone! The minute you talk about men and women, you are obligated to stop and read trans scholarship. Especially us premodern historians, talmudists, and late ancient historians. Don't put all the labor on the scholars who find exceptions to your cisnormative rule.
