I love this story both for itself and for the idea that at some point Dustin Hoffman must have heard it and felt a way about it.

my favorite robert redford story is that mike nichols considered him for dustin hoffman's part in THE GRADUATE. during their conversation nichols asked redford something like, "have you ever struck out with a girl?" and redford's response was basically, "i don't understand the question"

I had the joy of acquiring this book as a publisher and did the first bunch of edits. It's unbelievably fun, the absolutely best of historical fiction while being about as accessible as it gets. Just go and buy it! Also Tony is the nicest man in the world.

I don't really care that they refused to mourn left-wing and liberal figures when they died, I'm not taking my moral cues from them, that's the whole point

ENRAGED by the newfound knowledge that The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019) has an average rating of 6.4/10 on IMDb, who are the people who disliked it, were they all born without a soul, or capacity for joy

Or they don’t want her doing anything else, but they don’t want to martyr her at this precise point in time

Re-reading Jane Austen at the moment, and it's one of those 'it feels daft to say that Jane Austen was a terrific novelist' things.

@stephenkb.bsky.social I’ve been reading you about seven years now I think and I still think this that you come back today is one of your best insights:

“a lot of the true greats are underrated because everyone feels silly recommending them.”
laurasrobinson.bsky.social
So I think it’s broadly about the structural expectations of the genre. So of course not every novel about love is romantic fiction but I’d go to the wall arguing that Normal People and One Day were and neither were marketed as that. But it might have something to do with why they were so popular
laurasrobinson.bsky.social
Perhaps your ‘they’re doing more interesting things than following the rules of genre fiction well’ is my ‘yes, that’s what good genre fiction does’? As in how we define these categories is contestable
laurasrobinson.bsky.social
I think that’s true of all good genre fiction
laurasrobinson.bsky.social
I think it’s the weakest of the three with a bit of a saggy middle but still wonderful
laurasrobinson.bsky.social
Definitely true but I’d argue that in a lot of lit fic the reverse is true and that’s no better. It’s simply that the market is bigger for genre and so more of the dross makes it into print
laurasrobinson.bsky.social
And those terms like spec fic are precisely designed to obscure in case clever people might realise they're reading genre fiction

This is so interesting, because I love her Tudors so SO much, and find them page-turning. I loved BB too, and you know I'm the last person in the world to be snobby about genre. But I find it fascinating how differently we view different books.
