These internecine potshots are counterproductive. I certainly don’t endorse everything @governor.ca.gov has done, but shepherding a bill to ban Trump’s secret police from concealing their faces when conducting law enforcement operations and going tit-for-tat in redistricting are both solid actions.

Still, even @governor.ca.gov was bad on this issue, if you’re threatening to hand the presidency to JD Vance over that alone, don’t expect most Democratic politicians or voters (including those of us who are ourselves queer) to sympathize. They’ll look elsewhere for support, and rationally so.

Newsom isn’t throwing transgender people under the bus by not explicitly signing this specific bill (which will go into effect if he doesn’t act), and California has established some of the strongest trans protections in the nation.

Hopefully Jay and the @bsky.app team remain firm on this point. Singal, Yglesias, Hanania, and the VP can all be blocked (I’m often tempted myself); I’m not interested in making them unavailable to other people unless the violations are explicit and indisputable.

“Out of the three mass shootings TODAY” is one of the most tragic uniquely-American sentences out there.

Most developed countries average zero per year. We have single days where you have to ask “which” when someone talks about a mass shooting.

Iraq War veteran Thomas Sanford has been identified as the gunman who attacked Grand Blanc Mormon church, killing 2 people and setting it ablaze. Out of the three mass shootings today, two of them have been carried out by Iraq war veterans.

Oh, I think I remember seeing that, actually! But I feel like that question is slanted towards the opposition (currently DEMs), since casting an out-party majority as a "check" on executive power is favorable to the out-party.

So it's probably right that it's not listed in the averages.

These are calls for mass political violence, against all Democrats. They openly call for the bombing of "Democrat" cities and for the jailing or killing of Democratic politicians. They are from some of the most influential voices in right-wing politics. Will anyone say anything?
