I’ve had the opportunity to interview fabulous executives, nonprofit leaders, and writers over the years. I’m always impressed when @billmckibben.bsky.social speaks about our fragile earth and solar energy. @laurenmarkham.bsky.social did an excellent job moderating tonight’s talk in #SanFrancisco!

Civil liberties advocates have warned about this for years: an ICE agent used data about remittances to Mexico to track down an immigrant, solely on a charge of unauthorized reentry — not money laundering or any other crime often used to justify such surveillance theintercept.com/2025/08/21/i...
ICE Hunts Down Immigrants by Spying on Their Wire Transfers
Investigators traced the remittances an immigrant was sending from Hawaii to Mexico to figure out his location.

This is part of the greater war on education and expertise that’s ongoing. A professional class of law enforcement is anathema to the people in power who want blunt weapons with which to beat the undesirables, not people who can think, and question, and refuse.

Apart from firearms, the part of training we spent the most time on (if I am recalling correctly) was legal instruction. Now the FBI is hiring people with no college degree and slashing training time in half (reducing academics, guessing ethics also). Absolute disaster www.nysun.com/article/fbi-...

Olive farmers are noticing the effects climate change is having on their harvest, and many foresee a struggling future.

Grantee @laurenmarkham.bsky.social traveled to #Greece to find out how rising temperatures are affecting these ancient crops.

Story for @bloomberg.com.

The old ways are still in use. Here, an olive grower picks the fruiting crop from the trees, then gathers them from her net into a bucket, preparing to screen them and remove any leaves, twigs or dirt. Image by Myrto Papadopoulos. Greece, 2025.

I've been an immigration reporter for a long time. I've never seen communications from DHS appear quite this unhinged, unprofessional, and just wholly unconcerned with seeming legitimate.

A horrible story but god bless this woman so accurately reading the ICE goons for filth here
Marisa said she is eft with nothing BUt questions.
"What if I would have been armed," she 2 said. "You're breaking in. What am 1 supposed to think? My initial thought was we were being robbed-that my daughters, being females, were being kidnapped. You have guns pointed in our faces. Can you just reprogram yourself and see us as humans, as women? A little bit of mercy. Care a little bit about your fellow human, about your fellow citizen, fellow resident. We bleed too. We vork. We pleed justlike anybody else bleeds. We're scared. You could see our faces that we were terrified. What makes you so much more worthier of your peace? What makes you so much more worthier of protecting your children? What makes you so much more worthy of your citizenship? What makes you more worthy of safety? Of being given
the ight t that they took from me to protect my daughters?"

The weird, vague grammar of “you won’t have a country anymore.” Its deliberately awkward phrasing makes response impossible. What does it mean to “have” a country? If one doesn’t have it, where does it go?

If you are or you know a USCIS officer at the Vermont Service Center, pls contact me on signal at tanvim.05. I've been covering immigration for 10 years, did it under Trump 1.0, and have a track record of protecting my sources' identities.

The U.S. says it doesn’t have the power to return Abrego Garcia.

El Salvador also says it doesn’t have the power to return Abrego Garcia.

It’s obvious bullshit and depraved to the core.

Pam Bondi: “That’s up to El Salvador if they want to return him…If they wanted to return him, we would facilitate it, meaning provide a plane.”

Nayib Bukele: “How can I return him to the U.S.? Like, I smuggle him into the U.S.?”

No, you put him on the plane the AG just said the US would provide!

this is a staggering amount of money to build camps—suggesting that building & running a gulag will be the primary function of the otherwise gutted Trump-state

in last fiscal yr: "D.H.S. allocated about $3.4 billion for the entire custody operation overseen by ICE"

Trump Administration Aims to Spend $45 Billion to Expand Immigrant Detention
A request for proposals for new detention facilities and other services would allow the government to expedite the contracting process and rapidly expand detention.

The world knows about climate change mostly because of great American researchers, and that work has been largely centered at NOAA.
Trump and Musk are now shutting down that brilliant work. They are contemptible, short-sighted, and sold out
