NEW STUDY: How much CO2 can we safely store in geological formations?

In a new @nature.com study, we cross-check established academic and industry estimates with various risk factors.

We find a prudent geological CO2 storage limit that is about 10x smaller. /1

We are entering a new climate reality affecting us beyond the immediate impacts. As a society we need to develop certain capabilities that have been underdeveloped, including:

- Situational awareness
- Resilience
- Speed

Today @thecccuk.bsky.social releases its assessment on UK climate adaptation

It shows a dangerous apathy to systemic risks

E.g.; "there aren’t enough indicators to assess overall progress accurately" on becoming more resilient to systemic risks in the food system

“Our security depends as much on tanks as it does on energy stability and an affordable supply. Whether or not you think the world is a more dangerous place, you can still improve the security of your society through renewables.”

It was great talking with @wsj.com

The Q is whether institutional risk assessments (which only partly draw on climate modelling) will be improved. Eg in finance, these also rely on the consultant’s black box modelling, academic models, qual stuff. Then the Q is whether an assessment that includes, say, AMOC risk would be published

1/ The view from our bedroom window earlier this week was the eerie sight of a blaze across Garth Hill, South Wales.

The weather conditions preceding the fire were extremely dry leaving the grass & bracken to turn to tinder.

Here's a 🧵putting this fire context...

Will climate risk assessment actually be improved?

We need it: eg, pension funds think 4C will shave ~1% off assets

But even if assessments were improved, there might be a material disincentive to disclose

Are we in a 'delayed disclosure trap'?

Hope @davidho.bsky.social doesn't mind me quoting him but I spotlight his take as an excellent way of thinking about what happened in the Senate.

That's right! The world is currently heading on a 3C+ future (at the very least). Flawed institutional risk assessments are offering cover to financial institutions employing the fiction that financial markets can be in anyway stable in a 3C+ world (and in doing so justify continued fossil use)
