It's fucking easy to say "oh Trump is insane" or "oh it's because he's X" or "oh it's because he's Y" because then you don't need to grapple with the reality: we have so many fascists right now because the conditions in this country allowed fascism to flourish.

I suspect they've actually felt that way for a long time, but they will definitely never admit it. They see acknowledgment of a mistake as a character flaw, so they have to double down.
