Surprise, surprise.
Thriving populations of many plants and animals — including wolves, bats, birds and trees — underpin humanity’s well-being.

We are learning that without saving nature, we cannot save ourselves.

We are not the crown of creation just a link in a chain. Not rulers but dependents.
First, the frogs died. Then people got sick.
An emerging area of research is uncovering hidden links between nature and human health.

Bonta: Just minutes before the hearing, we got word that the Texas National Guard has been federalized.

We asked the judge to issue a broad order — one that applies to every National Guard unit in every state — stating that none of them can be deployed to Oregon.

Surreal moment for America. Needless to say, if the normal police ever pulled something like this — pulling every single person out of an apartment building and handcuffing them to run warrant checks — they would be sued into oblivion.

Yet ICE is going to get away with it entirely.

The buff-tip moth (Phalera bucephala) has mastered a very particular kind of camouflage.

When they close their wings up, they resemble a broken twig.

Native to large parts of Europe, there's regional pattern variation that reflects the local tree species. This one best resembles birch twigs?

So go ahead and check out that book even if you don't think you'll finish it. No one will know. Check out that DVD even though you might not like it. Get ambitious in your quest for knowledge.

On this day, 60 years ago, LBJ signed the Voting Rights Act into law.

For the last 20 years, Chief Justice John Roberts has chipped away at the law, and will most likely write the 6-3 opinion in next term's re-hearing of Louisiana v. Callais.

It has been brought to our attention that some sections of Article 1 are missing from the Constitution Annotated (constitution.congress.gov) website. We’ve learned that this is due to a coding error. We have been working to correct this and expect it to be resolved soon.

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie.

An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough.

So finish the thing.

The Perfect Storm

1. The National Weather Service vacancy rate at its Texas offices doubled since Trump took office.

2. Kerr County (which voted 77% for Trump) did not have a warning system because local residents didn’t want to spend the money.

3. Climate change is making this happen more often.
