🌊🤿 I’m Louise, I study how rising anthropogenic CO₂ impacts the ocean’s carbon cycle. My focus is on the marine biological carbon pump and the ocean’s carbon sink.

I recently gave a TEDx talk on deploying robots in the Antarctic Ocean to better constrain the ocean carbon sink 🕹️ youtu.be/mPi08_HC6cg

In the afternoon, we spent time with the @noc.ac.uk team to get hands-on with their Lab-On-Chip systems for DIC and TA — miniaturized chemical analyzers that can perform complex carbonate chemistry measurements.

Never been more motivated to write grants so I can buy all these shiny new toys 💸

Morning of Day 3 at the @george-project.bsky.social TF II, we looked at the ClearWater pH sensor and how it’s designed for high-precision autonomous ocean pH measurements 🔥

🤖 We also got to see so many incredible @vliz.be marine robotics platforms. From USVs to AUVs and gliders!

⚙️ Then moved on to testing the GO pCO₂ system, the heart of real-time autonomous measurements for air–sea CO₂ exchange

🧪 Had a great time tinkering with the HydroC CO₂ sensor setup at the @george-project.bsky.social TF II. So cool to see the internal components and how these systems are engineered for high-precision ocean measurements

🌊 So excited to be at the @vliz.be in Ostend for the second @george-project.bsky.social Technical Forum focusing on sensor technologies developed within the project.

Time to play with some ocean tech! 🎮🧰

The world has lost its most powerful advocate for nature and hope. Yet many remain who will continue her legacy and I know she will continue to inspire generations more.
A screenshot of a post by the Jane Goodall Institute on LinkedIn stating that they learned that Dr. Goodall passed away due to natural causes in California while on her speaking to her current speaking tour there.

🔎 What we show:
• High-frequency pH captures fine-scale diel variability.
• North Atlantic: temperature explains most short-term pH; South Pacific: biology and distinct water masses weigh in.
• Despite local wiggles, mesoscale pH/CO₂ fluxes are stable.

Reef fish, such as this pufferfish in North Bali, contribute to ecosystem function by linking lower and higher trophic levels in coral reef food webs. They are also incredibly cute.

Frauke Bunsen, Cara Nissen and Judith Hauck assess the impacts of climate change on the global ocean carbon sink

doi.org/10.1029/2023...

#ocean #carbon
Figure 3: (a) The mean air-sea CO₂ flux density and (b) trend in the CO₂ flux density 1958–2019 in the historical simulation (simulation A) (c–f) The effects of the rising atmospheric CO₂ concentration and climate change on the trend in the CO₂ flux density obtained as the difference between two simulations with and without interannual variability and trends in the respective variable(s): (c) Atmospheric CO₂ concentration, (d) full climate variability and trends, (e) winds and (f) global warming. Positive values denote a trend toward more oceanic outgassing or less oceanic uptake, respectively. Hatched areas in (b–f) indicate a low significance of the trend (p-value > 0.05 applying a two-sided Wald Test with t-distribution).
