Reminder - the exoCean lab is hiring

The lab keeps evolving and we are THRILLED! More equipment is about to arrive, some more is planned, and we feel super excited about our different projects. Also really… what a view when the doors are open, one can even see the emblematic « sainte victoire » behind the trees!

This study hypothesized that rapid organic carbon deposition and active microbial respiration in the deep ocean environment may promote the occurrence of intense #SilicateWeathering, and proposed a conceptual model of carbon-silica coupling cycle in the #Deep-sea 🌊🧪🪨
Rapid burial and intense degradation of organic matter drive active silicate weathering in the subsurface sediments of the ocean’s deepest realm | Geology | GeoScienceWorld
Hadal trenches (>6000 m water depth) have been revealed as hotspots of organic carbon burial and microbial respiration in the ultradeep ocean

This week, I gave a TEDx talk on listening to the ocean’s climate clues. A few days later, I found myself underwater doing exactly that—though not quite how I expected.

We captured a fin whale call on a GoPro while diving near Nice. Estimated ~5 km away. Wild.

ExoCean is in #Bermuda! Or at least most of it is (sorry @sulpis.bsky.social). We're here looking for foraminifera to grow in the lab, and sediments to observe how they will react to ocean change.

The thing about early alteration of grains in the sediment, is that there are a lot of things living there. So, while chemistry is what's working on the fundamental level, (micro)biology is a critical mediating factor. 🧪⚒️
