My current read of Richard Hofstadter's *Anti-Intellectualism in American Life* (1963) is genuinely disarming me in how quintessentially transphobic this genre of conservative rhetoric already was in the 1940s. This example is just one of many, from the first 50 pages alone

Testimony before a subcommittee of the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, House of Representatives, 79th Congress, 2nd session, May 28 and 29, 1946, cited by Hofstadter. The quote reads:

"
One Congressman objected in these words to including the social sciences in the National Science Foundation:

'Outside of myself, I think everyone else thinks he is a social scientist. I am sure that I am not, but I think everyone else seems to believe that he has some particular God-given right to decide what other people ought to do. . . . The average American does not want some expert running around prying into his life and his personal affairs and deciding for him how he should live, and if the impression becomes prevalent in the Congress that this legislation is going to establish some sort of an organization in which there would be a lot of short-haired women and long-haired men messing into everybody’s personal affairs and lives, inquiring whether they love their wives or do not love them and so forth,
