These drownings are completely avoidable with bycatch reduction devices which attach to trap openings and stop most terrapins from entering. They protect terrapins with little or no effect on crab haul. They also make blue crabs more bankable in an increasingly eco-conscious market.

Several states across diamondback terrapins’ range already require these devices for crab traps, including Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Florida.

#Virginia is considering legislation to require these commonsense devices on all recreational crab traps.

Additional claimants are expected to join and it is predicted that a first-instance decision will come in 2-3 years' time.

Nobody should be exposed to harmful chemicals without their knowledge and polluters should be held accountable for the damage they cause.
