I’m getting on a plane for the first time in about a year, and there’s a guy in line wearing a particulate respirator mask—the kind with the screw-in filters on the side. But he also has a scruffy little beard, which means his mask isn’t really sealing to his skin. America: So Close™️

@cantb.bsky.social and I shared some thoughts/concerns about the proposed higher education compact in this @chronicle.com piece. But I still think that quite a few red-state publics would sign up, if for no other reason than state legislatures would expect it.
Trump Says Signing a New ‘Compact’ Will Benefit Colleges’ Finances. It Could Also Do the Opposite.

The best guess of climate experts at this Overshoot Conference is that - in an optimistic scenario - we return to 1.5C (where we are now) in 7 generations time.

That's about the same distance from now as the start of the Industrial Revolution.

My latest: AI is all over college classrooms, for good or ill, but what about admin offices? It’s making inroads there, too, though what effects it will have remain to be seen.
Can Colleges Be Run Using AI?
A third of college administrators say they use the technology for small and big tasks. The results are mixed.

I’m working on a column about faculty motivation in the current landscape where

-new jobs can be scarce
-academic publishing is messy
-grants are being axed
-merit pay is spotty

If you have perspective and experience you’d care to share, please let me know. (1/2)

Yet another moment when I find myself thinking, Are you dead? Cause you look dead. (He is not dead, thankfully.)

The steering-a-truck-down-the-hill-backward sequence was more pulse-pounding than every cruddy action movie released over the last 10 years combo.

i was sitting in a really dull corporate event for hours and hallucinated that somebody coined the portmanteau "innobition" (as in innovation + ambition)

The most unrealistic thing about the Superman movie is all the characters reading hard copies of daily newspapers.
