a great thread with a mass of resources to help you think through "socio-technical imaginaries" — those contested discursive spaces where powerful interests try to shape how you think about the future

Has anyone else been dealing with some serious headline whiplash recently?

Even for those of us who follow #climate and #energy matters closely, it can be hard to know what the hell is going on!

So here's a thread to help climate communicators get a grip on how to deal with this 🧵

Just a box containing some numbers that should make every single one of us re-evaluate what we choose to do for the rest of our lives.

Brussels no car day is the best day even if it was a bit chilly! So much calmer and quieter and so many kids about on their bikes. This should be every Sunday #brussels #carfreeday

perfect timing to have encountered this rebecca solnit quote this morning
For those of us whose lives are already easy, giving up means making those lives even easier, at least in terms of effort. For the directly impacted, giving up means surrendering to devastation. Giving up on their behalf is not solidarity. And I doubt that anyone in desperate straits has ever taken comfort in the idea that somewhere far safer, people are bitter and despondent on their behalf or have decided they are doomed.

It's the last day of the summer holidays for my daughter's tomorrow and I'm seriously considering running the 'how much TV would they watch if I never told them to switch it off' experiment. If I don't bring them snacks would that affect the outcome?

I felt like this living in Woluwe St Pierre (one of the richest communes in Brussels) and being part of protest groups and legal action against airplane noise and getting absolutely nowhere. And reading this it's also so infuriating that people happily buy wood-fire burners to poison their own air

After the wildfires in Los Angeles County earlier this year, Calabasas residents thought it would be easy to keep hazardous waste from being trucked to their local landfill. They were wrong. “If they can do it to this community, that means they could do it to anybody,” one resident said.

I’ve been reflecting on my own input into the climate debate over the past 2 decades - a @tyndallcentre.bsky.social report coming soon 👀 - & reading this reinforces my own sense of sadness that messages about equity, sufficiency&need for demand-side transformation are still failing to cut through.

New piece on Carbon Colonialism, net-zero nonsense, and how the UK Government's climate advisors (and many experts) shy away from speaking truth to power. We need a fundamental reboot of climate policy; - physics doesn't care about political sensibilities. theconversation.com/the-uks-year...
The UK’s year of climate U-turns exposes a deeper failure
Breaking free of the dangerous pretence that current efforts suffice demands a fundamental rethink of the UK’s climate policy consensus.

Across 142 routes in Europe, trains are on average twice as expensive as flights

On some routes, they are 26 times the price

Low-cost airlines profit from unfair tax exemptions, but trains are burdened with VAT, energy taxes and high track fees

Governments and the EU must stop rewarding polluters
Low-cost flights up to 26 times cheaper than trains - Greenpeace European Unit
Brussels, 21 August 2025 – A new Europe-wide Greenpeace study shows that climate-damaging flying is still cheaper than taking the train on a majority of  cross-border routes – even though…

Comedian Jerry Wayne Longmire discussing a Texas electricity bill as if he were in a Faulkner novel.

TXU is the Texas utility company and HEB is a Texas grocery store chain.
