Journalism has a long and strong tradition of resisting authoritarianism and racial terror. In 2019 I made a podcast about that history, connecting it to the present day. Perhaps you will find it useful? push.fm/fl/vfsw

Talking to folx in prison reminds me that people have been living with extreme authoritarian conditions, including censorship and denial of trans health care, prior to this moment. Let's listen when they tell us how to get through it and what they need. #solidarity truthout.org/articles/bei...

"It's easy to feel powerless in here. I try to fight that."

"We aren't the monster in the dark that people need to fear. The monster people need to fear walks in the light and sits in a White House. History will reflect the veracity of my words."

I assume that we won't get Surgeon General reports about the epidemic of white men shooting people and sociological studies about where their fathers are?

Thank you Evan. It was such a pleasure to talk to you, in spite of the terrible context.

September 15 at 3 PM ET: If you're a journalist or media maker concerned about criminalization, join us and IC Abolition Journalism Fellow @lewispants.bsky.social at our next online space to share strategies, connect, and build networks of support: www.interruptingcriminalization.com/events/all/m...
Black text on a beige background, made to look like the cover of a newspaper. The masthead features the text: "February 24, May 19 & September 15. VIRTUAL MEETUP. bit.ly/JournalistsMeetupReg"

Below is a headline, text, and black and white photo of handcuffed hands: "Journalists and Media Makers Concerned About Criminalization.

We are in a time of escalating criminalization, targeting Black and Brown people, migrants, trans people, poor people, and those involved in resistance movements, as well as media makers and journalists.

We cannot be neutral on the question of our own safety and humanity, and more and more journalists are joining the effort to resist criminalization.

Our power in this resistance comes from the connections we have to one another.

IC invites journalists and media makers concerned about criminalization to come together to better establish networks of mutual support, and share strategies for combating criminalization through media."

Really interesting new research from Pew about how U.S.-ians view journalists. I'm fascinated by the tension between "advocating for communities" and "political beliefs"...https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/2025/08/20/how-do-americans-think-journalists-should-act/

"The kinds of articles that really help people are not PR releases for organizations but real breakdowns of tactics that have and haven’t worked, real descriptions of the ins and outs of a given strategy or approach. With stories like these, we don’t need doomscrolling." — @lewispants.bsky.social

As a former President of a law school chapter of the Federalist Society, I just want to say how important it is that we are naming the lower-level functionaries in government and pinning their unethical and immoral behavior specifically to organizations like the Federalist Society.
