Fascinating read and immensely important for doing history better.

Most textbook authors protect us from a racist Lincoln. By so doing, they diminish students" capacity to recognize racism as a force in American life. For if Lincoln could be racist, then so might the rest of us be. And if Lincoln could transcend racism, as he did on occasion, then so might the rest of us. During the Civil War, Northern Democrats countered the Republican charge that they favored rebellion by professing to be the "white man's party." They protested the government's emancipation of slaves in the District of Columbia and its diplomatic recognition of Haiti. They claimed Republicans had "nothing except' nigger on the brain." They were enraged when the U.S. army accepted African American recruits. And they made race a paramount factor in their campaigns. In those days before television, parties held coordinated rallies. On the last Saturday before the election, Democratic senators might address crowds in each major city; local officeholders would hold forth in smaller towns. Each of these rallies featured music. Hundreds of thousands of songbooks were printed so the party faithful might sing the same songs coast to coast. I do have the essentials ready to go and the wife fueled up the jeep. The newest update is that it has increased to an advisory but with data showing that whatever does happen will be large swells and bad currents.

When history textbooks leave out the Arawaks, they offend Native Americans. When they omit the possibility of African and Phoenician precursors to Co-lumbus, they offend African Americans. When they glamorize explorers such as de Soto just because they were white, our histories offend all people of color. When they leave out Las Casas, they omit an interesting idealist with whom we all might identify. When they glorify Columbus, our textbooks prod us toward identifying with the oppressor. When textbook authors omit the causes and process of European world domination, they offer us a history whose purpose must be to keep us unaware of the important questions. Perhaps worst of all, when textbooks paint simplistic portraits of a pious, heroic Columbus, they provide feel-good history that bores everyone.

I have learned that Helen Keller was a radical socialist and lived into the 60s. She recognized that her success was tied to the advancements of others and her position in society.

“How Propaganda Works” Jason Stanley
How could one grow up naively into adulthood in a state that professes to follow liberal democratic ideals, but in which there is overwhelmingly illiberal practice? To maintain stabil-ity, the propagandistic use of the liberal democratic ideals will be required to cover up the significant gap between ideals and reality. This is the species of propaganda that centrally concerns me in this book, the kind that characteristically masks the gap between the given ideal and reality by the propagandistic use of that very ideal. Failures of democracy could be hidden by the propagandistic use of the very vocabulary of liberalism. This kind of propaganda is what one may think of as masking propaganda. But there are forms of propaganda that are not masking. Propaganda that extols the virtue of Aryanism is, for example, not of the form that centrally interests me. But we can obtain a general conception of propaganda, of the kind that is most interesting and important and of the more obvious kind, by reflecting on the notion of an ideal. Propaganda in the sense of this book essentially exploits an ideal. The ideal can be aesthetic, health-related, economic, or political. Advertising is a kind of propaganda that typically exploits an aesthetic ideal or an ideal of health. Given my focus in this book, I will concentrate on political ideals. This book is more academic than Stanley’s ‘How Fascism Works’, but just as important. Here, Stanley builds a definition of propaganda and explains why and how it’s used and its effectiveness.

His works are part of a reading list I have to help me understand the tools used against us.

This completely ignores the companies that can’t afford to offer insurance or the major companies that keep employees at part time so that they don’t have to offer insurance. So someone literally works 2-3 jobs to make ends meet and have no access to insurance. Delusional dumb asses.

A friend of mine saw this in her magazine The Week. It stands out to me because growing up we didn’t see publications stand up so boldly. It really speaks to the times we are in.
