Plant a hawthorn! These native trees are wonderful for wildlife, supporting all sorts of creatures – including more than 300 insect species. The blossoms, berries and leaves are a good source of food for bees, birds, caterpillars and more.

If you want to reduce plastic use, avoid yellow kitchen sponges like these. They're made of plastic, can't be recycled, don't break down in landfill – and release microplastics into the sea. Eco-friendly, compostable alternatives are available – see: littlegreenspace.org.uk/reviews/seep...

The Redwing steals the show in today’s #AutumnArrivalSpotlight! 🍂

Their rusty red flanks and soft ‘seep seep’ calls are a sure sign of autumn as flocks sweep in overnight from icy Scandinavia, Iceland and Russia.

Spot them enjoying berries in our fields and hedgerows.

Keeping a small area of grass unmown throughout autumn & winter can benefit wildlife. Long grass offers protection to all sorts of creatures, from beetles & bumblebees to frogs & toads.

We need to plant many more native trees in urban spaces, and better protect and value existing ones. This helps nature and wildlife. It's #ClimateAction. It reduces floods, pollution and urban heating. And it improves our lives!

The UK offers ideal pear-growing conditions – but only around 8% of pears sold here are home grown. Traditional orchards are excellent habitats for wildlife, but they're now rare – so planting pear and apple trees can really help boost biodiversity.

This autumn, please consider leaving dead plants in your garden rather than 'tidying' them up. Over the winter they will provide sheltered spots for hibernating ladybirds and lots of other creatures 🐞

We're passionate about connecting people with nature. Through hands-on activities and education, we invite individuals to step into the process of rewilding.

In doing so, people become stewards of the environment, forming a lasting bond with the landscapes and wildlife they help bring back to life.

Pesticides are harmful to all insects, including bumblebees, butterflies & other pollinators. Pesticide residues also move up through the food chain to harm birds & mammals, and they end up in rivers.

Small gardens can boost biodiversity just as much as big ones. And when joined together, tiny nature-friendly spaces create wildlife corridors that can benefit hedgehogs and all sorts of other wildlife!

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest accumulation of marine debris in the world – a soup of plastic and microplastics covering a shocking area of around 1.6 million square km. Avoid adding to the pile-up by reducing single-use plastics.

To help insects this autumn, let native plants grow in a wild corner. Teasels, dandelions, dead nettles and hemp-agrimony all flower into autumn, providing nectar for butterflies and bumblebees.

🍄 #Fungi on this fallen birch log are helping to keep the forest alive. Without them, dead leaves and needles would pile up. These amazing decomposers break down organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil for plants to use again.

They also give the forest its wonderful #autumnal smell! 🍂
