What’s #Christmas without the stunning Wilton Diptych? A rare surviving set of tempera panel paintings, a portable set made for the private use of Richard II, King of England from 1377 to 1399. The brilliant blue garments of the angels are painted with ultramarine, made from lapis lazuli. 🎄 1/

Goodnight from Mary Judd, taking the bees a ritual slice of cake as she keeps her manners and tells them all her news. Goodnight from Evie Hobbs, desperately trying to stay awake till the hour on Christmas Eve when animals are said to be gifted the power of speech. Goodnight from Hookland.

For Christmas Day an early medieval gold foil cross found in Andelfingen, dating 7th c. AD.
Gold foil crosses were purpose-made for burials, they were sewn on the veil that covered the deceased.
They are regarded as one of the earliest Christian symbols in southwestern Germany.

Merry Christmas everyone, here's to a happy and healthy 2026🌲
The 13thC nativity at St Clements, Ashampstead is so beautiful, it's part of a larger cycle of the life of Virgin which took my breath away when I first saw it.
I love that the ox and the ass have been left in charge of the baby.

"This story doesn't need a sandworm"

This is almost always wrong. Arguably, EVERY story benefits from adding a huge subterranean worm with quasi-mystical or semi-supernatural powers, or equivalent (similar to Moby Dick).

Obviously the bigger the worm, the more literary quality it adds.

First of three still lifes. I'm a portrait photographer, but it's fun to use the studio for some still life from time to time. It gives an opportunity to play with light and really take my time without having to try the patience of another human being.
