"I asked the leaf whether it was frightened because it was autumn and the other leaves were falling....
The leaf told me, “No. During the whole spring and summer I was completely alive. I worked hard to help nourish the tree, and now much of me is in the tree."
- Thich Nhat Hanh

The Thread

A stranger weeps.
You do not know why—
but still,
your throat tightens.
This is the thread:
what touches one
moves through all.
Pull gently.

“To live, we must die every instant. We must perish again and again in the storms that make life possible.”

The great Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, who lived nearly a century, recounts the experience he had at 35 that revealed to him the purpose of life:

Anyone remember the Amish friendship starter craze of the 90s? People would bring it to work to give away. That stuff grew and grew and unless you use it constantly, or give away, you’d end up with a swimming pool full of it. You could make all sorts of baked goods from it. 🍜🍽️

This is Mrs. Florence Bell, the first nurse to go to the Royal Veterinary College of London. This is a cigarette card from my collection and in the info about her on the back it says “the more she sees of humans, the better she likes animals”. 1938.
