Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

Archbishop Laud was born #OTD in 1573. This copy of Lorenzo Traversagni’s ‘Margarita Eloquentiæ’ (St Albans, 1480), was almost certainly in his personal library& went to @bodleian.ox.ac.uk after his death. It was ejected as a duplicate in 1862 & is now @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Inc.5.J.4.1[3632].

So many things have gone sideways over the years. Careers yanked out from under me, an abusive marriage and the creeping destruction of democracy leading to the rapid spread of blatant fascism.

I get mental stability & the will to continue from doing simple things. Baking bread, canning & pickling.

Rutilio Manetti A Life Study: a Monk Sleeping against a Pile of Books 1616 (The Morgan)

I think this is much more likely a friar than a monk. But it's still a wonderful image.

We weren't gazumped but buying our first place the seller pulled out at the last minute (the day all the paperwork was due). Nine or ten months had passed between offer being accepted & that point; we'd paid for everything including the survey, & had to pay the solicitors for everything. Pretty grim

Next to majestic Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire can be found the remains of its medieval monastery, including the 12th-century Prior's House and parts of the infirmary complex. These are now regarded as the oldest collection of monastic buildings still in daily use in Britain. #MedievalMonday

I don't normally like glasses which obscure the colour of the wine but am loving this 17th century one from the Rijksmuseum.

Gilt arms of Sir John Harington (1592-1614), on a copy of Lucan’s Pharsalia (Venice, 1498). He studied with Henry Prince of Wales & went on a tour of Europe: in Venice the English ambassador described him to the Doge as the Prince’s ‘right eye’. @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Inc.3.B.3.121[1756]. (1/2)

Set of three grisaille paintings on leather depicting theatrical figures, possibly from the Commedia dell'arte (French, early #c18th #c18 #18thc), with Matthew Holder, London
The figures have heightened expressions and animated gestrures: one sings from an open songbook, another brandishes a jester's staff and the third plays the bagpipes. Painted in greys heightened with white
