Neither saint nor demon, Dano's depiction of the Fabelman family patriarch is so achingly real, particularly in his depictions of a father struggling to connect with his son and this kid's passions. It's a magnificent turn both informing the most moving Fabelmans moments and capturing Dano's gifts.

When we're kids, we see our parents as all-knowing Gods. When we grow up, we resent them for "restricting" us. Often, they're just as messy as their offspring and also stumbling their way through existence. Dano quietly exudes that reality in his screentime without lapsing into broad caricature.

which makes the movie look like it's either trapped in motion smoothing hell or buffering. The space otters and whales are innocent. Otherwise, Fire and Ash is a drag and a derivative one at that. Don’t even get me started on the uncomfortable racial politics of the new Ash People villains…

James Cameron’s wild imagination can only produce various grey, metallic backdrops for assorted action sequences to transpire against. Verve and visual imagination are in short supply here while the exceedingly mopey atmosphere deprives the proceedings of any fun. Hate the inconsistent frame rate..
