Over on @looperhq.bsky.social , I broke down the absolute worst movie moments of 2025! Behold my breakdown of unforgettable (for all the wrong reasons) scenes like Gal Gadot rapping!

2025 brought a new batch of iconic scenes to screens worldwide. These handpicked 12 are not those ones. Instead, these are the worst movie moments of the year.

Warner Bros., please, put Spike Lee's American Utopia in theaters, even if it's just for two days through Fathom, I must experience one of 2020's greatest cinematic triumphs with a crowd, so we can all tap our toes to those beautiful versions of "This Must Be The Place" and "Road to Nowhere."

it might seem surprising that the people who said “look, let trans people live their lives, but i have Reasonable Concerns about sports and toilets” aren’t up in arms about this, but what you have to remember is that those people who said that are liars who were lying

One of my great privileges of 2025 was writing this essay for the outstanding publication ScarleTeen. So honored they'd highlight it!
@lisalamanfilmfan.bsky.social says it loud and clear in her latest: the humanity of autistic people is not up for debate, no matter the lies institutions of power spread. Autistic readers, let this piece be a reminder of all you offer to this world by existing.

I had some thoughts about the impending Netflix/WB merger, how all corporate mergers are evil, and what we can do to help each other in these dark times where Silicon Valley knuckleheads run amuck

There are no good corporate mergers in the world of film. Warner Bros/AOL, DreamWorks/Paramount, Disney/20th Century Fox, Paramounts/Skydance, they create fewer jobs, ensure fewer movies get made, and offer fewer choices for audiences. There's no way Netflix/WB doesn't continue this trend.

I know this is like comparing Princess Mononoke to Pooh's Heffalump Movie, but watching Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 over 28 hours really solidified how we just forgot how to shoot/light/visualize movies over the last 22 years.

This book is tremendous, art this good should be cherished and supported endlessly!
My novel Lessons in Magic and Disaster makes a fantastic holiday gift. It's a queer mother-daughter story about healing and learning to see each other more clearly. With bonus 18th century literature secrets!

This is a profoundly anti-Black country. Not just racist but ANTI-BLACK. It is foundational and everpresent.

There are so many Paul Dano performances I adore, but his soft-spoken yet impactful turn in The Fabelmans is especially exquisite. His subtly nuanced portrait of a stand-in for Steven Spielberg's father realizes our parents as they truly are: multi-faceted human beings.

Stellan Skarsgård agrees that Netflix films shouldn't qualify for the Oscars without a full theatrical run

"That’s the only way to make the theaters survive ... Without cinema, you don’t have any Netflix"

Either you understand that there is an organized campaign to push trans people out of public life with the explicit end goal of "morally mandating us out of existence" that is backed by some of the wealthiest individuals to have ever lived, or you're simply not equipped to grasp what's happening.

Just three installments into this franchise, the Avatar saga delivers its own Star Trek Into Darkness/Jurassic World Dominion/Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire with Avatar: Fire and Ash. A total rehash of prior installments right down to which musical leitmotifs factor into the finale.

WB doesn't have any new wide releases in December, they should bring One Battle After Another back into 2,000-ish theaters on Dec 19, make tickets $8 all day for two weeks, entice people to catch up on it on the big screen. I know they'll re-expand it in late January after the Oscar nominations drop

It always ALWAYS comes down to hatred of Black women.
Yep, one of the biggest drivers of the elite panic around “wokeness” was the increasing prominence of Black people and particularly Black women in their fields and we’re seeing that coalition rewarded with the targeting of Black workers.
Since February, according to my latest analysis, almost 600,000 Black women have been economically sidelined. The November 20, 2025, Jobs Report makes clear this isn’t a blip. It’s a structural crisis. That is not a recovery. It is a redistribution of opportunity.

The party that promised "free speech on campus" has made sure there can be no free speech on campuses.
This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.
