It's a luxury to think politics aren't personal. The 'issues' affect us personally!

So how do we write about them in more personal ways?

Beyond anger or detached 'irony.' Beyond 'Good vs Evil.'

We asked @aaronburch.bsky.social + @jeffchon.bsky.social and they shared some great thoughts...

“How to Write Topical Without Getting Preachy”

ICYMI: in September we chatted with editor @aaronburch.bsky.social and writer @jeffchon.bsky.social about “Nothing Personal,” Chon’s heartbreaking piece that takes on the murder of a healthcare CEO — from an angle that might surprise you.

Hey, I'm leading a two-hour generative writing session on Sunday, Sept. 28th through wonderful Cleaver Magazine! Would love to see you there. I have fun things planned! cleavermagazine.submittable.com/submit/32754...
KATHY FISH: READY! SET! WRITE! September 28, 2025

READY! SET! WRITE!

Instructor: Kathy Fish

Date: Sept 28, 2025, 2-4 PM ET on Zoom

Cost: $60

Have you found yourself terrified and intimidated by the dreaded blank page? It’s a common problem for writers! Choreographer and dancer Twyla Tharp says, “in order to be creative, you have to know how to prepare to be creative.” As a big believer in the value of pre-writing, I have developed several exercises and activities aimed at immersion and deep work before we begin the joyful task of creating new art. The result? Fresh, original drafts of surprising depth and beauty. In this engaging, interactive two-hour session we will begin with a series of fun and interesting activities and prompts that will prime our brains for creative expression.

I absolutely love this story by @ambersparks.bsky.social Recently, I saw a very grumpy call for submissions that listed all the things they did NOT want to see in their queue and this story fits a couple of those. Be open to brilliance and innovation, editors, and you will be rewarded.

With the exception of, like, a dozen giant name writers (and maybe even them too, tbh), even the smallest little note makes a writer’s day/week/month.

I started doing this thing where when I read a book I admire I try to find the author’s email & send a quick message saying I appreciated it. No big deal, not trying to be weird, but like: thank you for helping me think something new. It’s hard writing books. It matters when people read them.

Did you see your friend's book at the store? Email them a pic! See them cited? Email them (esp. as aggregators fail to catch many citations)! Did a scholar mention their work! Email them! Did a student use their work in a paper? Email! Did a professor teach their work? Email! Email! All the time!!!

Have done a handful of zoom class visits in last couple of weeks, and been reading a bunch'a submissions, and I don't really have much advice for writers/submitters, and this incredibly unhelpful, but as an editor:

I'm not looking for stories that are "good." I'm looking for stories that I LOVE.
