“From street cameras to drones and regional fusion hubs, surveillance systems are increasingly built atop AWS. The pitch Amazon makes to law enforcement is about more than raw infrastructure. It is also about access, connections, and momentum.“

At the Zuri store to pick up a new dress and spotted this one called "Geared Up" in the window, which I think would be perfect for engineers, scientists, professors, and any aspiring Miss Frizzle. www.shopzuri.com/products/gea...

I was sent this by a Georgian this morning. 2025 premiums vs 2026 premiums for someone making $65k a year.

Republicans in Washington did this.

This is what I'm fighting to stop. This is what’s at stake in this shutdown fight.

Closes 10/26

Beauty is not a luxury; rather it is a way of creating possibility in the space of enclosure, a radical art of subsistence, an embrace of our terribleness, a transfiguration of the given. It is a will to adorn, a proclivity to the baroque, and the love of too much.

A good thing to do is, if your state AG is a Democrat but is not on this, contact them directly and ask them why that is.

On Friday 18 blue state attorneys general BLASTED the Federal Trade Commission, telling it to back off trans youth healthcare and warning of an insidious attempt to reshape the regulation of medicine in the US.

And nobody covered it.

The book Technocreep and the Politics of Things Not Seen, from the chapter “Surveillance Vigilantes, Property, Porch Pirates and Paranoia on Nextdoor”
As geo graph i cally localized communities, neighborhoods are often social
communities with considerable face- to- face interaction among members. Next-
door aspires to the fictitious ideal of the midcentury American neighborhood as
an ideal space worthy of upholding through manufactured communities, much
in the way that Setha Low writes about how gated communities maintain white-
ness.26 Through a common bond based on location, residents in neighborhoods
seek to realize common values, socialize youth, and maintain effective social
control. One par tic u lar form of the neighborhood is the gated community, a
neighborhood encircled by gates and fences, often including security restric-
tions for entry into the neighborhood. Gated communities can choose to imple-
ment draconian restrictions to maintain their feelings of safety and privilege.27
Gating is only one example of this new form of social ordering that regulates and
patrols the un housed and the urban poor. While gated communities facilitate a
trade of constitutional rights for insulation from socioeconomic prob lems and
assurances of property values, Nextdoor facilitates a similar space by providing a
space to protect property without the same organizing and infrastructure.

Truly! I lived briefly in a neighborhood that wanted to reduce their reliance on the coops, but their solution was to use a community grant to buy ring cameras! I tried to get them to at least purchase cameras where they controlled the data and stored it locally, but I don't know what came of it.
littlebitkreyn.bsky.social
Thank you! I'll share this with them today!
littlebitkreyn.bsky.social
Funnily enough, I asked them what they thought their data was worth on Monday and a number of them said nothing or not very much. We'll be revisiting that conversation today.

This is my first time using Blackboard, so I was also surprised to discover that the platform evaluates the complexity of student writing, their level of critical thinking, and compares their score to other students in the class. (We use ultra if it matters.)
littlebitkreyn.bsky.social
We also talked about the possibility of Blackboard introducing its own LLM or partnering with an existing company to share data considering how many professors use it to collect student assignments - papers, journals, discussion board posts, etc.
littlebitkreyn.bsky.social
I was just talking to my students on Monday about how settler colonialism creates the conditions of data extraction that we encounter today. I ended class by talking about Blackboard (which we use) & asking them if they know how their data is being used and who it is being shared with.

If your institution requires you to use Blackboard for teaching (like me), be aware its parent company is broke and it's getting new private equity owners whose plans for the platform, and how they'll capitalize on it, remain unknown (bet it includes "AI") onedtech.philhillaa.com/p/anthology-...
What This Means for the LMS and EdTech Markets

For campus leaders: Blackboard will continue operating through the case, but the ownership and investment thesis behind the LMS are changing. This could affect long-term product direction and stability.

For EdTech executives: This is a textbook example of distressed-debt control in our sector. It shows how private equity cycles, first driving aggressive expansion, now dictating asset sales, reshape vendor landscapes.
