Thanks to CBA for two nominations for Teffont Archaeology! Delighted to see our efforts to engage people from all backgrounds and demographics in archaeology, and our training and skills work, for everyone from carers, to volunteers, to positive action placements and students, recognised like this.

We are thrilled to reveal the shortlist for the #ArchaeologicalAchievementAwards 2025. 🎉

Every shortlisted project demonstrates how archaeology connects people and places, and how it can spark fresh ideas about our shared past and future.

Congratulations to all shortlisted! 👉 shorturl.at/DbaPk

If it keeps them off the streets...! 😆

It does also fund all of BBC Sounds and BBC radio, which are then available for free to everyone. We're also helping to fund free licenses for the over-75s, and, frankly, catch Netflix doing that.

Having read the blurb, the killing stone in question appears to be a Neolithic carved stone pinched from a heritage centre and, for avoidance of doubt, DO NOT commit murder with Neolithic artefacts, this is HERITAGE CRIME.

Happy publication day to regular Orkney Library visitor
@anncleeves.bsky.social. The Killing Stones has just been published and features D.I. Jimmy Perez but now he has moved from Shetland to #Orkney!

It's less sassermaet and more fatty cuttie. #IYKYK

Available now from your local library.

This is a brilliant collection, full of gems, including the work about Orkney and Shetland. Lots to chew on.

I have been forgetting to buy a ball of string for several years now.
littlebonelady.bsky.social
So your life might be strange, but is it "stringing a rabbit backbone onto leftover knitting wool" strange?
A ball of blue wool trails off into a curvy animal backbone; the end of the wool is tied around the sacrum. It sits on a grubby red rug.

Lemon polenta cake. That's the usual "all the light has not yet gone out of the world" suggestion.

I cannot scone. The time of the scones is over, at least until I can find some sad gluten-free ones.

From the Ouse to the Severn. Hallo Wales, it's been a while.
An uninspiring muddy estuary under a grey sky, with hills visible in the very far distance. It's still weirdly beautiful. There ought to be some wading birds out there, but it's hard to see them from the train.

We could offer you a relocation package to Yorkshire?

Once again, the north-east is far too far from the south-west and we need to abolish the Midlands.

It's a beautiful day and I've got my first 250 miles to go. On CrossCountry trains. Pray for me.

So I'm off on a jaunt! In fact, over the next three weeks, I'm off on multiple jaunts because almost all my workshop / guest speaker commitments have fallen in the same month. I'll be covering over 1000 miles and will thus officially be a Proclaimer, although I'm not walking it, that would be mad.

Good morning, York station, how are you?
A view from Platform 3 at York railway station, with the tracks and the ornate Victorian brickwork and pillars curving to the left and vanishing. Sunlight is filtering in through the metal roof girders.

Betwixt being forever baffled and stunned

It's exhausting being an archaeologist
Archaeologists stunned 😲 Archaeologists stunned 😲 Archaeologists baffled 🤔 Archaeologists baffled 🤔

Talking about ancient technology, I've just resurrected my very first CD / radio / tape player for the refurbished workroom. It must be getting on for 25 years old and it still bleeding works.
A Sony silver and black boombox-style player sits on top of a set of Kallax shelving. On the shelf below is a faded collection of CDs propped up against a blue mug with the words "Vela Luka" on it.

"Andromeda", by John Bell at Osborne House, 1851

Thanks @ladybirduk.bsky.social for sharing 😁
A bronze statue of Andromeda with her hands chained behind her back, she's stood on a plinth in the middle of a pond with many tinkling fountains playing
