Tesla’s Robotaxi is crashing roughly once every 40,000 miles so far in Austin, and that's with a human safety supervisor in vehicle.

For comparison, the average human driver in the US crashes about once every 500,000 miles.

Now that the rose tinted glasses are finally coming off I feel more comfortable saying there have been cracks for a while in Larian’s image as a progressive forward thinking company.

I wrote about queerness and monstrosity in BG3, and it’s more reactionary than you might think.

the enthusiasm for generative AI would not have been possible without prior decades of capitalist conditioning to view works of art as products, rather than acts of culture and shared human life
I think the fundamental gap here is that non-creative people think that creative people make things for the end product, when in fact it’s the act of creation and not the end point that makes it worthwhile.
I have grown to believe that excessive wealth does something to your brain that is analogous to a serious head injury

Using gen ai for text and asset placeholders is not solving a problem; games have been made for decades with regular placeholders. studios using AI this way are just testing the water to see what more they can get away with - which will inevitably mean laying off skilled workers, to make worse games

Larian lost a lot of good will today but there have been issues simmering for a while I think, especially with some of their writing. If you’re interested in illithids and the Emperor (or on the fence about them) I do a thorough analysis of Larian’s writing around BG3’s central theme of monstrosity.
I take a deep look at the Emperor and monstrosity in Baldur’s Gate 3, and I do so with a little help from one of the greatest monsters in fiction: Frankenstein’s creation.

I’ve been neglecting my laundry while I finish this project. I have a pile I haven’t folded. Another pile in the dryer that is obviously not folded. My cat has claimed the former pile as her laundry throne, so it will probably never get folded.

I'll say it again -- I'm on my firm's AI committee: every canned demo has had brutal, malpractice-level errors, and every live trial has required more time and care to vet the output than to just do it, like working with an unteachably incompetent associate you'd need to sit down for a Hard Talk.

Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Queer Politics of Monstrosity.

To become a monster or not is the central conflict of the game. So, I decided to ask: what is a monster?

I spent a very long time on this project and it’s coming out in a few days as a podcast, then as an essay.

Absolute must read on the AI bailout-in-progress: apparently it's not enough that lifetimes of human ingenuity and creativity have been stolen and enclosed to create generative AI and balloon billionaire wealth - much more public looting is in store...
This week Open AI walked back a call for the govt to backstop financing for its trillion dollar investments in data centers. This was only the tip of the iceberg; a slow bailout for AI firms is already underway. Read more from @ambakak.bsky.social and I in @wsj.com: www.wsj.com/opinion/you-...

If you’d like to read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, you can do so for free at Project Gutenberg. (And as always, your local library).

Here’s the original 1818 publication.

Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced. If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?
