He's going to kill so many people and we're powerless to stop it. One of the most vile humans currently wandering around this watery rock.

Speaking from experience (I work in procurement), someone needed a Specific Thingy. They asked ChatGPT, which spat out the wrong part number. I had to spend 30 minutes convincing them it WAS the wrong part number and 5 minutes calling the human vendor who knew exactly what we needed.

This wasn't an "eh, this feels iffy" kind of thing where officers up the chain merely discuss the legalities. This is the kind of unlawful order where everyone down to the lowest enlisted has an absolute on-the-spot duty to say "hell no, I won't do that" because it's manifestly, facially criminal.

They're bogus but you can at least rationalize quasi-legalistic grounds for using military force against cartels, that they're a kind of combatant enemy. But killing people who are desperately clinging to wreckage in the open ocean is everywhere and always stone cold, undeniable, zero excuse murder.

It dovetailed with the freakout over the unlawful orders video, but also it is just qualitatively worse. It's absolutely a crime under all circumstances, even against a real enemy in a real war. And that has deep historical roots as *the* most notorious clear-cut war crime you can commit at sea.
Does anyone have a robust theory as to why the recent reporting on follow on strikes has galvanized this response and not you know the murders they were in the first order?
Note that both of the joint Republican-Democrat Statements from the Senate and House Armed Services Committees refer to the 'Department of Defense' - not the 'Department of War' - in their statements promising oversight of Pete Hegseth's actions.

A new post from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth just a couple hours after President Trump said he wouldn’t have wanted a second strike on alleged narco boats and that Hegseth said he didn’t order second strikes.

Shift from “there may be some classified or legal framework that could potentially be a viable excuse for the use of force if it won in court” to “oh this is the Ur war crime, like so clearly a war crime that there is no legal cover for this specific order”.

I'll say it again -- I'm on my firm's AI committee: every canned demo has had brutal, malpractice-level errors, and every live trial has required more time and care to vet the output than to just do it, like working with an unteachably incompetent associate you'd need to sit down for a Hard Talk.

"I'm going to tax the everloving shit out of the rich people who made your life miserable and put every masked thug who broke the law or traitor who wrecked the government for their own profit in prison" I admit is too long for a sign, but at the very least this should be the spirit of the thing.

For d&d-style play, I am an AWED dead-ender.
older gamers aren't mad about wokeness in games. we're mad that DND 4th Edition was jettisoned for the mechanically inferior 5th Edition
Even by the standards of anti-woke journalism this is lazy dreck. The first piece of "evidence" that older gamers are mad about wokeness is a random Reddit comment — that isn't a complaint about wokeness.

Look, if the Washington Post article is accurate, Hegseth should be brought up on charges and Admiral Bradley should be court martialed.
Senator Kelly is correct.

Plus a Public Service Announcement:

KEY section of Department of Defense's Law of War Manual is 18.3.2.1.

The VERY rule on the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders gives as its paradigmatic example of what is "clearly illegal:
"orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

If you think that the absence of the rule of law means that the powerful people you hate are going to be strung up instead of people like you, you are dangerously stupid
Sorry we tried it the other way for 30 years and everything got worse. String em up. If one or two executives get caught in the crossfire I genuinely couldn't give less of a shit. All those people in Grenfell are dead and it IS someone's fault and they GOT AWAY WITH IT and it'll happen again.
As an American living through our shit right now, I am really uncomfortable the idea that a better justice system is one that allows for the government to quickly dole out punishment when it’s politically expedient. The lack of repercussions for Grenfell is terrible, but think this one through a bit

Most famously, fixed the Last Crusade
Stoppard also had a huge (and largely unchronicled) film legacy. Obviously, just the work for which he was credited--Shakespeare in Love, Empire of the Sun, Brazil--is major, but he was also one of the most in-demand rewriters, fixers, and polishers in movies. We still don't know everything he did.

Honestly, I'm sort of OK with NYPD forcing the crowd to let them retreat. A bunch of ICE thugs being pulled from their kidnapwagons and getting torn to pieces by angry grandmas would be bad optics and invite retaliation.
Lots of shoving from NYPD to create an empty area for ICE to RETREAT after their planned raid got exposed

Confirmed: Earlier this morning a photog overheard agents inside the parking garage say “dismissed,” believed to be calling off their planned mass raid.

A source tells me they had planned for *hundreds* of agents to flood Canal St. They got flooded instead.

Yes, guilty. I am also terrible at branding! Also, my mother can't operate a backhoe or crane and my brother has never slung drugs on the corner.

My sister DOES have an actual skill and would like to eventually do law relating to it, but isn't right now.
