A white Apartheid dead-ender gutting the most successful humanitarian effort of the century, because it was saving too many Africans from AIDS, would have once been thought of as too "on the nose."

If there's an argument that what Musk/Trump have done to PEPFAR isn't a crime against humanity, I'm not really interested in hearing it.

So grateful for the opportunity to discuss my research on ethics and human remains in museums and research with museum professionals from a range of institutions, and thinkers from across the Netherlands this week.
We are never done with ethics, but we are doing the work.

I am honored to give the 2025 Gordon Childe Lecture at the UCL Institute of Archaeology in May, on the challenges and possibilities of making sense of the archaeological remains of how people in the past dealt with the great challenge, mystery, and crisis that is death. www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/...

Important read!
Open letter from Prof. Raphael Greenberg at Tel Aviv University calling out the archaeologists participating in a conference devoted to the archaeology of "Judea and Samaria" on the occupied West Bank, taking place right now in East Jerusalem.

Out today: The Oxford Handbook of Mesolithic Europe with contributions by brilliant mesolithic specialists from across Europe.
Solid and inspired research.
The beautiful cover by Tom Björklund captures the human scale of the past - a fundamental theme for the book.

Of course, while it is demanding it is also infinitely rewarding. But it is strange that it is not something we talk about more as part of our ongoing professional development.

Me too....but it is conplex work mixing layers of professional, personal, research, mentoring, teaching, emotional, and intellectual engagement at a high level of responsibility for all of this. It is not easy and it is rarely taught. We operate on instinct and experience.

Great piece that reminds us of the impact of good Ph.D thesis advisors - of the responsibility it entails, and of how hard and important this work (that we rarely talk about) is.

A grad student's supervisor is the launchpad of a career. While the few, bad supervisors grab the limelight, the spotlight on the new PhD elides the years & years of investment by good supervisors (the majority).
Yet there is no "Q" in HQP without them.

A recently published analysis of a 17th century painting reminds us of how misogyny, racism, and xenophobia are mobilized in times of insecurity. Well, old habits die hard. That sounds uncomfortably familiar.
