Discussing this phenomenon w/ a group of profs. Someone morbidly joked, “& northern profs are fleeing the country.” The next person said…”even if we were all willing & able to abandon this place there are not enough jobs for us globally and the U.S. employs a huge # of international scholars too.”

A cooking competition show where they declare a winner every week but nobody ever gets eliminated, they just have a nice experience, and then after 10 weeks everyone just goes home happy.

Time for my least favorite game: will the CVS smell like pee or pot today?

I mean, my school was founded in 1885, so I assume we’ve got a boatload of ghosts. 👻

Conversion therapy is stupid for the very basic reason that, even if being gay were a choice, it's still a completely good and normal choice to make.

Thinking a lot about how to square abolitionist policies with a cultural desire to seek vengeance in the face of terrible oppression. Can we really abolish ICE and all state violence if we’re also calling for the imprisonment of ICE agents? Can we change if we keep all the same systems in place?

My yearly reading has SKYROCKETED since I started reading audiobooks. Like, I used to only manage 2 or 3 books outside of things I teach. Now I read over 100 consistently, and most are audiobooks.

If whoever does these polls were to listen to librarians & admit that reading books on audio is reading, this number might change significantly.

(AND ALSO - remember @HistOpinion over on Twitter? I loved @HistOpinion.)
Screencap of a tweet from Historical Opinion @HistOpinion that shows a pie graph and a poll question from March 9, 1949:

"Do you happen to be reading any book or books at the present time?"

The Yes wedge is blue and shows 21%
The rest of the graph is No and shows 79%

Also please remember that you can love someone while refusing to subject yourself to the harm they inflict on you. These are not incompatible actions.

Remember to love the people around you, deeply and unironically. That’s going to get us a lot further than spite.

Pro Tip: catch up on peer review during contentious faculty meetings. You'll save yourself a lot of anger and help another scholar while you're at it.

PSA: It's okay for cishet men not to want sex, or not to want it all the time, or to have marital problems because of misaligned sexual desires, regardless of what their wife look like.

Men are complex human beings, not boners on legs.
