Freelance copyeditor/proofreader of many Canadian best-sellers & award winners, and 5 (count ’em!) NYT best-sellers. Member of SABR & SIHR. WWOZ Guardian of the Groove. I’ve got a lot of patience, baby, and that’s a lot of patience to lose.
Stuff like that happens when Metrostinx builds so slowly.

As someone who just had to proofread soft-headed doorstops by Jonathan Turkey and Warren Kinsella in rapid succession, I feel seen.
Q. What do you do if you're the copy editor hired to deal with Olivia Nuzzi's...thing?

A. 👇🏻
Check the spelling, regularize or at least tidy up the punctuation and grammar, query bits of text that are not simply gauche but undecipherable, maybe call out the occasional repetition, and otherwise just get it done so you can say you did your job.

No thank you, I’m still literally having nightmares about Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Attention MLB fans — especially BlueJays and Dodgers fans.

Bob Costas and Tom Verducci will have a two-hour special on MLB Network breaking down all the key moments of the 2025 World Series Game 7.

The show debuts on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. ET on MLB Network. Should be good.

Worse than Harper.

"Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to grant cabinet ministers the power to exempt any individual or company from any federal law on the books — except for the Criminal Code — for up to six years."

Althia Raj: Mark Carney is quietly giving sweeping new powers to his ministers
Sneaking a change of this magnitude into a 600-page bill that will not get parliamentary scrutiny raises a red flag, Althia Raj writes.

You just know that’s the thought running through the mind of the white-haired guy in the jacket and tie. “Wait a minute… I know you!”
hey, look! it’s the meme guy!

We’re hiring a thousand more bastards who don’t know their ass end from a hole in the ground. A thousand more Sergeant Renfrews, verging in Sergeant Schultzes.
Canadians deserve to be safe in your communities.

That’s why we’re hiring 1,000 more RCMP personnel and strengthening the Criminal Code — to help keep violent and repeat offenders off your streets.

If Perruzza wants to see transit construction hell, he should look to Eglinton West. Or for that matter, Riverdale, where I’m pretty certain the King streetcar has been replaced by buses (or, for a while, nothing) more often than it has actually been in service in this decade.

I’d say he’s operating on the premise that it’s easier to apologize than ask permission, but he never seems to apologize, either.
Imagine if the PM had just taken time to meet with Coastal chiefs *before* signing the MOU with Smith…

College students who can’t handle their strictest instructors need to grow up, which is part of what they’re there for. TPUSA and OU are ironically doing the triggered snowflake participation trophy shtick and harming everyone’s ability to grow up in the process

And come to think of it, if Hegseth ever cracked open a Franklin storybook, he’d shit his pants. Turtles and bears and rabbits and foxes living together in a community—if that ain’t an advertisement for DEI, I don’t know what is.
Franklin is so Canadian that Bruce friggin Cockburn sang the theme to his cartoon series, so Hegseth is barking up the wrong hollow tree.

He’s also named for Hawkeye Pierce, a character who refused to carry a sidearm and once crashed the peace talks in Panmunjom.
Life is now a Paul Verhoeven movie.
With less subtlety.

At what is now Toronto Metropolitan University, the grade was an X, or “redeemable failure.” And in 1985 I got one on my very first writing assignment for not knowing how to spell @ianausten.bsky.social’s surname.

I became a copyeditor of books, not a reporter, and you can bet I check EVERY name!
Also known as the “Auto E” or the “Medill F.”

I received them as a student. I gave them as an instructor. We are all better for the (awful) experience.
One of my first journalism professors would give you a zero if you had even one error of fact. It happened to me. Sucked so much. He was one of the best professors I ever had, I took three more classes from him, and we’re still in touch

Bananas republic
Trump just commuted the 7-year sentence of David Gentile, a private equity leader who helped defraud thousands of people out of some $1.6 billion, almost as soon as his prison stint began.

"I lost my whole life savings," one person wrote, adding, "I am living from check to check."

There's no scenario in which Carney comes out looking good. If he doesn't want a pipeline he's being dishonest with Alberta and throwing Indigenous folks under the bus. If he does want a pipeline he loses any credibility he still has on climate. You don't win by playing games like this.
If you expect Mark Carney won't take pipeline blame whether it's built or not, I have bad news for you: opposition parties aren't going to be charitable in their framing and voters aren't always charitable, or consistent, themselves.

Carney will be seen as Captain Pipeline.
