Different rubber duckies, same writer. @lmbayley at the other place. For now, this account only follows writers, editors, and lit mags. I like my echo chambers cozy! I recognize and respect all pronouns. Mine are she/her.

The thing to know about Office 365 is that the 365 stands for the number of days in the year they're planning to make sudden changes to your software.

I don't hate this story by @jaimegill.bsky.social ... I freaking love it. And @anchalastudio.bsky.social 's art is brilliant as usual!

Same transportation situation here! So add $8.00 to the cost if we both go. We never even thought of delivery. Thanks for your insights!

Your way seems to make more sense than that. :)

Amanda, this is fascinating. I'm curious: are the costs of transit and delivery figured into your calculations? I know people who drive all over the place trying to get the lowest prices at the grocery stores, but they don't seem to count the cost of the gas they're using up in their travels.

Hooray! Because of shipping costs from the UK to Canada, I've been waiting for the ebook. And now here it is! I very much look forward to reading it.

I wrote a raw piece about my experience commuting to work… it’s foul, but it’s 100% true. Thanks to @mrbullbull.bsky.social for giving my gritty CNF a home!

P.S. My serger's over 20 years old and I have to watch the video every time I want to thread it. If I were buying one today I would definitely get one that threads itself.
lmbayley.bsky.social
And the t-shirt you're showing off at the start of this thread shows me that you clearly know your way around your sewing machine! xoxo
lmbayley.bsky.social
But... could it hurt to take a field trip to your local Janome dealer? hahahaha To sum up: I'd still rather have my machines than a trip to Spain. But if you know your way around your sewing machine, and it does a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch, that's all you really need.
lmbayley.bsky.social
You don't need a coverstitch machine either, as long as you have a twin needle suitable for knits in your sewing machine. Here are pictures of the different stitches on the first shirt I made.
The inside of a t-shirt, showing the seam finished by a serger/overlock machine, and the hem finished by a coverstitch machine. The outside and inside of a t-shirt, showing the stitches along them hem made by a coverstitch machine. This same effect could be achieved by using a sewing machine with a twin needle suitable for t-shirt knits.
lmbayley.bsky.social
Oh, @sagetyrtle.bsky.social , I misread your initial question. OVERLOCK is what you're asking about! I call that a serger. A serger is fabulous, and not only for knits. BUT you don't need one: you can sew the seam with a universal needle on your regular machine and zigzag over the edge to finish.
lmbayley.bsky.social
I think so? For prints anyway... Solids might only be $20. But I'm in Northern Ontario, where supply and selection are limited.
lmbayley.bsky.social
You'll never ever make back the amount of $$ you spend on a machine and the fabric though. Do it because you love it, not because you want to save money. Mind you, you have access to the Garment District stores, so maybe knits cost you less than $30 per metre?
